How Kole's Mysterious Team Titans Return Amounted to Nothing

In every installment of Abandoned Love we will be examining comic book stories, plots and ideas that were abandoned by a later writer without actively retconning away the previous story. Feel free to e-mail me at brianc@cbr.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Today, we look at how Kole's return in the pages of Team Titans went nowhere.

Kole was a Teen Titan who tragically perished during Crisis on Infinite Earths...

However, a decade later, she suddenly popped up, seemingly alive,in Team Titans #8 (by Marv Wolfman, Phil Jimenez and Will Blyberg)...

She was tracking some vampires and in Team Titans #10, she shows up to help the Titans defeat the vampires....

But she disappeared before they could find out anything more about her...

Wolfman was already pulling back a bit on the book, just plotting the stories while Tom Peyer would script them. In Team Titans #11, we see Kole spying on the Titans and she makes a mention that suggests that she is not actually alive. Could it be that she was a vampire? Or some sort of continuity glitch?

In the next issue, Battalion (the Team Titans' leader) searches for his wife in the present, but Kole realizes that something isn't right with this timeline. His wife is not really his wife (she is a different person in this timeline)...

So Kole helps him deal with the heartbreak...

She then helps the Titans defeat another bad guy before, of course, vanishing again...

Then Wolfman and Peyer left the series. Phil Jimenez and Jeff Jensen took over as the new writers and they had no interest in pursuing the Kole plot, so it was just dropped.

However, as the series was coming to an end, they were asked to resolve the Kole plot. Obviously, they never even knew what the original plans were, but the end of Team Titans was a reveal that almost all of the Team Titans were secretly working for Monarch (who would later become Extant during Zero Hour, after absorbing some Linear Men). It was so secret that THEY didn't even know they were working for him.

As it turned out, much of their stories were just Monarch using puppets/agents under his control to push the Titans into the right direction, so various villains and heroes they met were all really just controlled by Monarch. This was subtly displayed in Team Titans #24, the final issue of the series...

Yes, the Team Titans all turning out to be working for Monarch wasn't even revealed in their own title. That's pretty darn rough. Heck, I guess that could be a Wrap It Up! I'll do that in the future!
