The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 4, Episode 6, "Brother Blood," now streaming on HBO Max.

Tyler Hoechlin spent the weekend at CCXP 2022, promoting Teen Wolf: The Movie. Like the actor that plays him on The CW, Superman was also absent for the Titans Season 4 mid-season finale, which is not a surprise. What's baffling is that Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't fixed one Superman problem with the best guy playing Kal-El currently under contract.

Titus Welliver appeared for a single episode as Lex Luthor; the parent company only gave Titans that long with the villain most adapted into live-action in the DC canon. (Joker is second.) Yet, the Titans writers took those Luthor-branded lemons and made lemonade. The story of Superboy dealing with his absent fathers has depth, especially if he sticks the landing. Either way, the season will likely end with Conner meeting Superman. Perhaps viewers will see as much as a red cape from the back, perhaps some red boots as he lands? Then a push-in on a smiling Conner seeing what David Zaslav and James Gunn won't let the viewers see! Jokes aside, allowing Tyler Hoechlin to cameo as that world's Superman is an easy layup crossover that directly benefits another HBO Max property. Perhaps the indeterminate break between the two parts of Season 4 is so that it can correct this massive oversight.

Superman & Lois Is on HBO Max Just Like Titans, It's Marketing!

Of all the Arrow-adjacent series, only Stargirl, Batwoman and Superman & Lois are on HBO Max, while the rest are on Netflix. However, Titans fans likely enjoy the series for its TV-MA nature, and may not automatically try out the teen melodramas from The CW. If Titans, also a Greg Berlanti production, paid Hoechlin for five days of work in Toronto, they could've shot a single episode or a handful of scenes to be scattered throughout the season. The Luthorboy twist would work better if Conner had any conceivable reason to care what Superman thinks of him.

From Conner's perspective, Dick Grayson is this regular-old kid who got to grow up around Superman. Yet, this being who can effectively be anywhere on the planet instantly has avoided his de facto son, at this point, for years. Even Young Justice didn't keep it up this long. Not having Superman, who is supposed to care about everyone, care about this kid hurts the character of Superman far more than mild confusion about why "the guy from The CW" is playing him and not Henry Cavill.

Conner emulating Luthor may be some sort of latent DNA sci-fi trickery from his late father. Perhaps Superman knows that if Conner ever sees him in person, that genetic programming would take over. So, in staying away, he is actually showing care. But that's a lot harder to explain on a show than simply having the charming guy already playing the character stop by for a walk-on guest role.

Warner Bros. Discovery Has Two Fantastic Superman Actors in Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin

Henry Cavill Should Look to Tyler Hoechlin's Superman for Inspiration

There is a suspicion that Superman & Lois only went forward at The CW because of a former WB exec "firing" Cavill from the role. Whether this is true or not, now that Cavill is back in the fold Zaslav and Warner Brothers Discovery have an embarrassment of riches. They have two actors who can deliver different-but-equally-excellent performances as their company's most valuable character. Yet, both WB executives and James Gunn seem committed to this idea that everything in DC should connect in a singular way.

Still, the current focus is cost-cutting on the HBO Max side without decreasing the service's value. One easy way to do that is to use the series on the platform for their crossover potential. Hoechlin plays a fantastic Superman, and his performance could make skeptical Titans fans curious about his series. Not only that, but it could also boost live ratings for Superman & Lois Season 3 at a time when Warner Bros. needs to prove the value of their series to The CW's new majority owners.

Superman has existed for 80 years, and if there was any limit on the amount of adaptation he can survive Warner Bros. would have already reached it. To be clear, Titans has handled the absence of Superman the best way it can. Hopefully, James Gunn realizes anything is possible in the multiverse, and that Tyler Hoechlin shows up to give Conner his Superboy father-and-son moment.

Titans Season 4, Part 1 is streaming on HBO Max, with Part 2 expected in 2023.
