WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 7, "51%," available now on HBO Max.

In Season 3 of Titans we've truly seen the depths and depravity of Bruce Wayne's (Iain Glen) parenting when it comes to Dick (Brenton Thwaites) and Jason (Curran Walters). He weaponized them with fear in order to get obedient soldiers. It's what ultimately led to both Robins breaking and flying the coop, but now, as Jason follows his path as Red Hood, we discover his new mentor, Scarecrow (Vincent Kartheiser), is an even worse father.

It's no surprise Scarecrow (i.e. Dr. Jonathan Crane) has manipulated Jason all this time, as his job has always been dissecting people's brains and using them as puppets. He convinced Jason to wage war on the Titans, by selling the idea that his anti-fear toxin would purge Gotham and pave the way for a rebuild.

Sadly, an impatient Jason goes rogue, stealing some inhalers and giving them to a group of goons, which causes a violent wave of deaths. Gangsters have damaged or killed over 30 people, but when Jason gets back to the lair, rather than be ostracized, Crane plays it cool, acting like Jason  accelerating their plan with inferior product is good.

Scarecrow keeps reiterating he's no Batman, but as Jason takes a hit of an inhaler, he falls to the ground. He's been poisoned, as Crane does indeed feel he deserves punishment for the insubordination. He tells Jason that he's a perfectionist and waiting is what brought the Boy Wonder to him, allowing him to send Batman into retirement. But Crane's not about physical blows; he wants to mentally wound Jason, after luring him into that false sense of security so he would share all Bruce's secrets.

He's already showed Jason Lady Vic can replace him and now, he straps Jason to a chair and has him watch as the drug is mass produced at their new base. Scarecrow wants him to see how expendable he is, leaving Jason hurting from the anti-fear toxin withdrawals.

Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing and Vincent Kartheiser as Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in Titans Season 3, Episode 4, "Blackfire."

The fact the operation's going smoothly translates into further physical anguish, giving Crane a sick satisfaction. That is, until the Titans raid and burn the lab to the ground. Crane has no choice but to cut Jason free and flee with his 'son,' telling him they'll make Nightwing's people pay. But in the back of the van, Jason keeps shivering, not from the coldness of the ice cream factory they hid in, but from how he's once more cracking on the inside.

He's losing faith in another father-figure and the way Crane weaponized the Bat-angst proves he's as twisted as it gets. Bruce, as bad as he was, didn't make his charges feel like discardable pawns, so for Crane to stick and then unstick this dagger so flippantly, expecting Jason to forgive and forget, shows he thinks nothing of the kid. It's pure ego, but as Jason endures this, the fact Crane's not paying attention due to his Titans' obsession is a clear hint Red Hood will be exacting revenge soon.

The first seven episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 8 will be released Sept. 16.
