WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 6, "Lady Vic," available now on HBO Max.

With Titans focusing on the theme of family, it's no surprise most of the attention has been placed on Batman's inner-circle, especially as Season 3's boiled down to Jason Todd (Curran Walters) waging war on Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites). However, one character that's been left out in the cold has been Superboy (Joshua Orpin), the hybrid created from the DNA of Lex Luthor and Superman. He hasn't met any of his kin since leaving CADMUS and becoming a hero, with the Titans being his lone support. But the latest episode of Titans throws a new romance his way, which may well be the catalyst for introducing Lex into his life.

It comes when Blackfire (Damaris Lewis) is brought back to Wayne Manor as the Titans try to figure out how to stop Jason and Scarecrow. Blackfire's not really a team player, though, only interested in making Superboy/Conner her man-toy. Kory lays down the rules but that doesn't stop some dangerous flirting. Granted, the innocent Conner doesn't know what's going on.

When the team heads out to investigate Crane stealing medical equipment, Superboy is tasked with watching Blackfire in the car. This allows them to bond, with Blackfire admitting she didn't crave power back home on Tamaran -- she led her rebellion as she wanted acceptance and love.

She was never recognized, treated as the black sheep of the royal family, as she couldn't muster the cosmic flame Kory did. As such, she was deemed to be cursed, ergo where all her bitterness came from. Kory confesses that all she wanted was a family as she was a lost soul, a child of no world, which resonates with Conner who feels the same way. He tells Blackfire to earn her spot and she'll get that warmth.

This gets his mind ticking, though, especially when Kory later questions him on the science of the equipment, which Crane's using to create his anti-fear toxin faster. She mentions using Lex for help as the villain is a scientific genius, and while it might be in jest, it hits Conner. He's been abandoned by Superman so Lex might be the only dad he can count on. He's gotten over feeling like a freak, but Lex, rather than being an emotional tool, can help Conner level up as a hero.

Superboy is showing the same prowess with tech, building deactivators in mere seconds to stop Jason's bombs, so Lex can help him unlock parts of his mind the Titans can't. It'd freshen up Conner's mythos a lot as he's usually seen as brawn, not brains. Plus this is an organic in for Lex, who was angry that CADMUS lost his 'son' and weapon at the end of Season 2.

Ultimately, it complements the dynamic of Superboy and Blackfire, looking out for each other and providing companionship they never had. But more so, a romance can help them explore and heal their identity crises -- that is, once they're able to stymie the dark parts of themselves and any ulterior motives by folks like Lex.

The first six episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 7 releases Sept. 9.
