Titans has been heavily accused of focusing too much on the Bat-Family and its many assorted characters. With Dick Grayson being the lead character, there was bound to be a focus on Batman, but as the seasons progressed more and more characters from the Bat-Universe were introduced. The HBO Max series has featured three different Robins as well as Barbara Gordon and Scarecrow, and adapted key Batman comic storylines such as "Death in the Family" and "Under the Red Hood." Titans' Iain Glen also portrays the best version of Bruce Wayne.

While the world of Batman is certainly interesting, that focus has meant that Titans' other characters such as Beast Boy and Superboy haven't had the opportunity to shine. However, with the recent announcement that Bosch star Titus Welliver will be playing Lex Luthor, that may be about to change. But why is it a good thing that audiences will finally get to explore the world of Superman -- and what might Season 4 have in store for Superboy?

Titans Nightwing

Superboy, aka Kon-El or Conner Kent, first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #500 (by Jerry Ordway, Tom Grummett, Doug Hazlewood, Glenn Whitmore and Albert DeGuzman) in 1993 as a genetically engineered clone of Superman. However, that was modified in Teen Titans #1 (by Geoff Johns, Mike McKone, Mario Alquiza, Jeremy Cox and Comicraft) in 2003, which revealed that he was a Kryptonian/Human hybrid, with the other half of his DNA coming from Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor. Due to the character's status as a Titan, it was only a matter of time before he appeared in the series. Viewers were teased in the Season 1 finale before Superboy made his debut in Season 2.

He was hunted throughout the season by Lex's assistant and bodyguard Mercy Graves while being joined by a genetically modified dog called Krypto. Both Connor and Krypto joined the Titans and move into Titans Tower in San Francisco. However, when Titans Season 3 moved to Gotham and focused heavily on Dick, Bruce and Jason Todd, all the other characters were pushed to the side. By the end of Season 3, neither Superman or Lex had appeared in the show, despite being name-dropped on several occasions.

Lex's appearance means that audiences will get to see Superboy grappling with the fact that he is made from both someone who is intrinsically good and someone else who is evil. This is a fascinating concept with Superboy potentially trying to find which side he sits on. He's shown to be a hero, but if he's half Luthor, there's bound to be a dark side to him -- and Lex's arrival could unlock that. Lex is a manipulative character who would use his "family" relation to Superboy to try and sway him, perhaps turning him against his fellow Titans. If Superman has been absent from Superboy's life like the character has been from the show, Superboy's first interaction with a father figure will be with Lex.

Why Would DC's Smartest Man Trust [Spoiler]?

Introducing Lex also allows Titans to explore the world of Superman further. DC are known to be incredibly possessive of their characters, only allowing certain characters to appear in live-action media and being wary of more than one version of a character appearing at once. However, Superman has been allowed to appear on both the big and small screen with no restrictions. There have been several instances in the character's history where two versions have existed at once, such as Tom Welling playing Clark Kent on DCTV's definitive Smallville while Brandon Routh portrayed Superman in films. Titans casting Welliver as Lex seems to be an indication Superman could finally appear on the show -- or at least will get mentioned a lot more.

Titans Season 4 looks like it will finally move away from its focus on Batman -- which is important for the series and its fans. Superboy is a fan-favorite and no matter what is in store for him in the upcoming season and what role Lex Luthor will play in it, the writers can explore the relationship between the two characters in greater detail. It's the latest big development for viewers to look forward to. Season 4 will also include a new villain in Brother Blood, a new costume for Beast Boy and a potential crossover with Doom Patrol and Stargirl, all when the series returns this November.

Titans Season 4 premieres Nov. 2022 on HBO Max. A specific premiere date has not been announced.
