Aquaman’s own former sidekick was recently confirmed to appear in season 2 of the DC Universe original series, Titans. While many are excited to see Aqualad make his live-action debut in the series, there are still plenty of fans who are still unfamiliar with the character, or at least this version of him. Despite Aqualad’s extensive history as Aquaman’s sidekick, there is still a lot about him that goes well beyond the shadow of his mentor. To help prepare fans for his upcoming debut on the series, here is our list of everything fans should know about Aqualad.

10 His Real Name is Garth

One of the more important things to know about Aquaman’s original sidekick is that his real name is Garth. Garth has no last name, as many Atlanteans don’t, and he is also the adopted prince of Atlantis. After befriending Aquaman, Garth was brought up as his apprentice, going on whatever missions he could. Over time, Garth would eventually grow out of the sidekick role, much like everyone else on the original Teen Titans. As his own man, Garth would assume the name, Tempest.

9 He is of Royal Descent

While Garth is not directly related to Aquaman in any way, he is still of Atlantean royal descent. His mother and father were the monarchs of Shayeris, an Atlantean colony located outside of Atlantis itself. Garth’s true father would be killed following a bad political move and his mother banished while she was still pregnant with him.

When Garth was born with purple eyes, he was declared as genetically inferior and sentenced to death. However, an Atlantean sorcerer would come to take pity on him and raised him as his own. After several years, he would come to meet Aquaman and join him on all of his adventures.

8 He Possesses Magic Abilities

Unlike his mentor, Garth possesses magical abilities that give him an incredibly powerful advantage during battle. Like Mera, Garth can control and manipulate water. Unlike Mera, however, Garth’s ability to do so is derived from magic, rather than being an organic power. Garth has also shown to rapidly heat/freeze water molecules, fire bursts of energy from his hands, and even open portals to other dimensions using his abilities. The only downside is that Garth doesn’t like to use his magic, as it can be unpredictable and do more harm than good.

7 Other Versions

Going beyond Garth, the Aqualad character has had several other interpretations and iterations over the years. Kaldur’ahm is likely the most popular version of Aqualad, as he is the main version in DC’s highly popular Young Justice TV series. In the comics, however, Jackson Hyde is the closest character to Kaldur, though there are still some pretty significant changes between the two.

Recently, Jackson has been a part of DC’s Teen Titans title during their Rebirth event, though his whereabouts in the universe are now currently unknown. Like Garth, both versions of Aqualad also rely on heavy use of magic, though each is distinct enough to be interesting to audiences as their own character.

6 His Time As Tempest

As previously mentioned, Garth would eventually graduate from the role of Aqualad and take on the name, Tempest. Much like how Dick Grayson went from Robin to Nightwing, Tempest served to show that Garth had successfully matured into his own person who was more than capable of operating on his own.

During his time as Tempest, Garth would operate mostly on his own, eventually rejoining his former teammates as part of the new team, Titans. While Garth would continue to play an important role as part of this series, he would scarcely have any significant role in the larger scale of the DCU. It wasn’t until DC’s Rebirth event where Garth was once again brought into the spotlight as part of the Titans series

5 He is a Founding Member of the Teen Titans

While on the subject of the Titans, Garth was a founding member of the original Teen Titans. Alongside Kid Flash and Robin, the team was first seen together in The Brave and The Bold #54 which debuted in 1964. Eventually, the small team of three would add it’s fourth member with Wonder Girl. From there, the team would go on to have several iterations and some pretty significant changes in the lineup. While Garth isn’t typically thought of as a Teen Titan, his presence on the team impacted the characters for years going forward.

4 He Dated Tula

Tula is another popular character who is part of Aquaman’s large supporting cast. She has even been seen in other media, such as Young Justice, as well. Her relationship with Garth was always nice to see when they were together but also felt like it could never last at the same time. The two were great together but had to constantly worry about things like their responsibilities to teams and Atlantis. Throughout the years, their on-and-off relationship ultimately came to a definitive end when Garth married his other on-and-off girlfriend, Dolphin.

3 He Was Married to Dolphin

Garth would eventually come to marry his other famous love, Dolphin. Following an accidental pregnancy, Garth initially freaked out. This unexpected reaction certainly caused a rift between him and Dolphin, though the two would eventually reconcile and decide to get married. The two actually had a rather touching ceremony in Atlantis, surrounded by other members of the Titans. Garth and Dolphin would raise their son together for several years going forward. The two would also remain married all the way up to DC’s New 52 relaunch in 2011. As of DC Rebirth, however, Garth is once again single and childless.

2 He Was Acting King of Atlantis

As the adopted son of the King of Atlantis, Garth has had to assume the role of King himself from time to time. Regardless of whether Arthur is off on a Justice League mission, done with his royal responsibilities, or dead, the Atlantean throne typically falls to Garth during Arthur’s absence. Like his predecessor, Garth isn’t always happy with the responsibilities that come with leading the Atlantean people. However, he has always seemed more willing to accept the responsibility than others. Fortunately for Garth, he also possesses a lot of good leadership qualities that have all come in handy during Arthur’s many absences.

1 His Weakness is Air

As is the case with many Atlanteans, they need a constant supply of water in order to sustain themselves. Fortunately, Garth requires less than others, which is how he is able to survive on land for so long. That doesn’t stop him from needing a recharge, though. Thankfully, due to his unique powerset, Garth has an easier way to recharge than others. He can simply use his own abilities to draw moisture from the air and into himself, allowing him to stay far away from a body of water for an extended period of time.
