The DC Universe streaming service has launched a poll recreating the controversial phone-in campaign from 20 years ago that allowed readers to call in and vote whether Jason Todd’s Robin should die in the comics.

Fans ultimately voted to kill off the sidekick at the hands of the Joker in what would become Batman: A Death in the Family.

Taking influence once more from the Batman #427 cover, voters can call the “1-(900) 720-2660” number to vote that he lives, or “1-(900) 720-2666” to vote for his death. More than 17,000 votes have been cast since the poll launched yesterday, with over 70 percent picking his survival. The original phone-in campaign lasted for just 36 hours and ran at 50 cents per call, with more than 10,000 votes killing off Jason, who died after Joker beat him with a crowbar and left him for dead in a warehouse explosion.

It's widely seen as one of DC's most-talked-about moves, as it gave fans creative control over the sidekick, who wasn't well-received in the wake of Dick Grayson leaving the mantle behind. This story eventually allowed Jason to become Red Hood, which fans saw in the 2010 DC Universe Animated Original Movie Batman: Under the Red Hood, as well as the popular video game Batman: Arkham Knight.

It's not known if this could dictate the fate of Jason (Curran Walters) in Titans, as he runs into conflict with his predecessor Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and his crew. Titans has placed Jason as a hothead, as expected, but with no signs of The Joker, it seems unlikely at this point, making the poll simply a nostalgic marketing scheme.

Now streaming on DC Universe, Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven and Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, with Curran Walters guest-starring as Jason Todd.
