'Odd Couple' is defined as two people sharing the same interest despite vastly different personalities and ideals. The biggest male odd couple going at Marvel has been and continues to be Cyclops and Wolverine.

Creators at Marvel have been evolving and changing the characters ever since Charles Xavier first recruited the diminutive Canadian to help rescue Cyclops' old team. They've forged mutual respect and admiration for each other despite their differences, and their pairing often leads to some amazing stories. In this piece, we're going to break down some of the best stories featuring Mutantdom's greatest odd couple.

10 Infiltrating Genosha

Wolverine and Cyclops had been transformed by Apocalypse during the Twelve storyline, physically and mentally. Just after that, Magneto began to raise an army in Genosha with Charles Xavier in chains.

Agreeing to clear the tunnels in Uncanny X-Men, the two long-time comrades come to grips with their current situations. Wolverine sees a change in Cyclops, who now seems to acknowledge his emotions more. Cyclops explains how he himself had never grilled Wolverine about Weapon X or his missing past. Their interactions on the mission show two men with mutual respect.

9 Sentinels Assault the Mansion

In Astonishing X-Men, Cyclops and Wolverine are part of a more public X-Men, who not only don costumes to take on threats in the open, but also take part in raising the children at the Institute. But what happens when Sentinels bring the fight to their doorstep?

Cyclops, Colossus, and Wolverine fight the robots while Kitty Pryde evacuates the students to the Danger Room. The three men are getting knocked around when Cyclops decides to fully unleash his optic blast. All that’s left of the Sentinels is a crater and Wolverine’s awe.

8 Savage Land Hijinks

To be fair, Ultimate Wolverine is a jerk.

When Cyclops and Wolverine are sent to the Savage Land on a mission, the tension surrounding them is palpable: Wolverine’s intentions towards Jean Grey are fully evident, and Cyclops – her current love interest – isn’t pleased.

In this wild tale written by Mark Millar, Kaare Andrews perfectly captures the Ultimate mutants as they dodge death and discuss their problems. Despite their seeming improved relationship, the mission ends With Wolverine leaving Cyclops to fall helplessly into a chasm to die.

See? Absolute jerk.

7 Schism

Schism was a tense storyline where Wolverine and Cyclops take opposing viewpoints on the state of not just the Xavier School, but also on the future of mutantkind.

They have always had a grudging respect for one another, but here they’re at each other’s throats. Although the debate began with Wolverine in favor of re-opening Xavier’s school, it moved to the morality of using young mutants in the field and eventually to who loved Jean Grey more. It’s a powerful scene that shows repressed grief and anger between the two, done by X-great Alan Davis.

6 New X-Men

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely kicked off the newest era of mutants in style with New X-Men. Gone were the colorful costumes of yore, with dark colors and leather taking their place.

At the start of their opus, they featured Cyclops and Wolverine on a rescue mission to Australia, where they saved a mutant named “Ugly John” from a sentinel attack. They presented a good first impression to the young mutant, and even though this mission ended in tragedy you saw their mutual admiration enter a new level. A great start to an epic run.

5 Re-Assembling X-Force

The events of Messiah Complex saw Cyclops give the green light to a gutsy idea: he and Wolverine decided to let loose a black ops team of mutants to do dirty work off the grid. It was so effective that once the dust settled, Cyclops again approached Wolverine to get the band back together.

They butted heads on the roster, with Wolverine taking the more cautious, empathetic approach and Cyclops leaning towards the best possible candidates. It was fascinating to see the two taking such moralistic stances, as opposing as they were.

4 Rosenberg Destroys the X-Men

Before the great Hickmanning of the X-Universe, Matthew Rosenberg got to pair the two men together for one last ride into the sunset.

Both had just returned from the dead under mysterious circumstances, and both faced a present that saw mutantdom fractured and facing destruction. In one of the grittiest X-stories ever, Cyclops deals with how overzealous he had been in his leadership, and Wolverine can no longer tolerate getting his hands so bloody over a cause he doesn’t believe in. Yet despite it all, seeing these two together after so long? Lovely.

3 Wolverine and Cyclops Toast

The events of Schism and AvX left the two old friends on opposite sides of the split, essentially enemies vying for the future of Xavier’s dream. There was a lot of fighting between them, both physical and verbal, whose scars would show for long after this period passed. However, in spite of all their beef, they could come together in the face of a common enemy.

In Wolverine & the X-Men the school is assaulted by Sentinels (of course), and both men are torn up pretty badly. Not too badly, though, because they take time to hash it out over a brew.

2 Assault on Weapon Plus

Cyclops was in a bad place, figuratively and literally. Distraught over the death of Jean Grey, Cyclops landed face-first into a near-constant flow of alcohol, spending time at the Hellfire Club’s more exotic location. Wolverine, in need of a commanding presence and cunning strategist, pulled Cyclops out of his stupor and into a mission.

The two men broke into the Weapon Plus program, with Cyclops still in a malaise and Wolverine approaching a breakdown from exposure to some nasty new knowledge. It was a sloppy, frenetic adventure, captured beautifully by Chris Bachalo.

1 Make More Mutants

What started as a snarky comment by Nightcrawler in the Quiet Council begat an island-wide carnal carnival: Make More Mutants!

In House of X, this brand new age brought to us by Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz, mutants are hooking up with abandon, meeting formerly unrequited desires and taking ‘open relationships’ to a new level. In fact, when the diagram of Cyclops’ home was released in X-Men #1 (designed by the astonishing Tom Muller) it’s shown that Jean Grey’s room has openings to both Cyclops’ abode and Wolverine’s room. Odd couple indeed…
