10 "Wormy" Used Real Footage Of An Insect

The scariest episode of SpongeBob SquarePants is, by far, "Wormy." The episode misleads its audience into thinking they will enjoy a story about a sweet little caterpillar, but after he turns into a butterfly, "Wormy" showcases unnerving live-action footage of a real insect.

"Wormy" uses real footage of a horsefly, complete with unsettling buzzing sounds. The footage may be a meme now, but many viewers were legitimately terrified of the live-action footage, ironically just as scared of the "butterfly" as the Bikini Bottom residents were.

9 The Show Had Scary Fleas That Sucked The Characters' Blood

Similar to "Wormy," the episode "A Flea in Her Dome" showcases fleas that suck the blood from Sandy Cheeks, SpongeBob, and Patrick Star. Although there is thankfully no live-action footage, the fleas are very life-like and are even shown giving birth.

"A Flea in Her Dome" likely made hundreds of viewers' skin crawl watching semi-realistic fleas frequently attack the SpongeBob characters. The fleas gave birth to millions of others, creating an entire swarm that trapped SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick in a sea of blood-sucking parasites.

8 The Cyclops Murdered SpongeBob And Patrick

In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick ventured out to Shell City to find King Neptune's crown and save Mr. Krabs from execution. The Cyclops, an evil human hardhat diver, kidnapped SpongeBob and Patrick and brought them to the surface.

It was revealed that the Cyclops was murdering sea creatures and selling them at a gift shop. In one of the most shocking SpongeBob moments, the Cyclops slowly killed both SpongeBob and Patrick. It was flabbergasting for a kid-friendly series to kill off its main characters, especially in such a torturous, methodical way.

7 Gary Had To Run Away From A Snail Murderer

In "Have You Seen This Snail?," Gary the Snail ran away and an elderly woman decided to adopt him. It seemed that Gary had it good, but the lady kept overfeeding him and the episode revealed that Gary was in mortal danger.

The lady had a closet that was filled with dozens of rotten, empty snail shells, revealing that she had been killing her pet snails and keeping their remains. The snail killer would be any pet's worst nightmare. Fans can only imagine how kids whose pets ran away must've reacted to the snail killer in "Have You Seen This Snail?"

6 SpongeBob And Squidward Turned Into Snails

SpongeBob SquarePants' "I Was A Teenage Gary" utilized body horror transformations. The episode parodied films like I Was A Teenage Werewolf by having SpongeBob and Squidward transform into snails.

As funny as the parody was, "I Was A Teenage Gary" lingered on SpongeBob's transformation, showcasing the painful, unnatural contortion of his body. The episode then saw SpongeBob trying to reach Squidward, making it look like a monster stalking his prey. It may have been fun watching Squidward terrified of SpongeBob, but some fans may have had disturbing dreams about turning into snails.

5 SpongeBob's Brain Scared Everyone

In "Scaredy Pants," SpongeBob kept failing to scare people. Instead, he only managed to scare himself. By the end of the episode, however, SpongeBob unintentionally managed to frighten everyone, including the Flying Dutchman.

As it turned out, Patrick unknowingly shaved off SpongeBob's head all the way to his brain. Not only was SpongeBob's brain exposed to everyone, but he also looked terrifying. SpongeBob may have been as cheery as ever, but his creepy appearance could've given the Xenomorph from Alien a run for its money.

4 Rock Bottom Was An Unknown, Unsettling Place

A scared SpongeBob all alone in the dark in Rock Bottom from SpongeBob SquarePants.

The "Rock Bottom" episode played on people's fears of darkness and the unknown very well. The actual Rock Bottom location was almost pitch black and incredibly unsettling compared to the colorful and cheery Bikini Bottom.

"Rock Bottom" really captured the feeling of being lost and alone in an unknown area. Without anyone's help, SpongeBob was constantly worried about potential attackers and getting back home. "Rock Bottom" makes viewers think that someone is legitimately out to get SpongeBob. Fortunately, it was a friendly Rock Bottom resident who finally helped SpongeBob get back home.

3 Sandy Became Dangerous While She Was Sleepwalking

It's one thing to deal with an attacker, but it's dreadful to think of being caged with them. SpongeBob and Patrick tried to get away from her, but they were trapped in the tea dome.

The episode "Hooky" discusses fishing hooks from the sea creatures' perspective. Although the episode is mainly about SpongeBob learning not to risk his life over momentary fun, "Hooky" doesn't shy away from the reasons for fishing hooks.

Mr. Krabs explained that the fishing hooks bring sea creatures to the surface to be cooked and eaten. Later on, SpongeBob and Patrick went near an area with hooks and Patrick mentioned that "there was one kid here earlier." As he said that, the camera focused on a pair of sneakers in the foreground, indicating that the child was taken to the surface. It was a morbid moment that let viewers imagine what horrible fate the poor child went through.

1 The Bitter, Miserable Woman In "Chocolate With Nuts"

An elderly woman and her mother in a wheelchair from SpongeBob SquarePants.

SpongeBob SquarePants showcased the horror of spending the rest of one's life with someone who makes them miserable. The episode "Chocolate with Nuts" introduced Incidental 87, an elderly woman and her rude mother.

The elderly woman waited patiently for her mother to die, but her mother comically and horrifyingly wouldn't pass away. The mother was practically a skeleton but still managed to live to verbally torment her daughter. It's a nightmarish scenario and the mother's appearance was certainly unsettling. "Chocolate With Nuts" ends with SpongeBob and Patrick going out to dinner with Incidental 87.
