Just about everyone knows who Godzilla is. Whether you've seen a Godzilla film or not, the name brings the image of the massive lizard to your mind. The truth is that Godzilla is one of the biggest movie characters of all time, starring in so many movies it would make your head spin. Toho gave the character his claim to fame, but other studios like Legendary Pictures have also given it their best shot at bringing Godzilla to the big screen. One of the reasons people love watching Godzilla is to see just how powerful he is. Being a lizard that towers over buildings, it's impressive to see the limits of his abilities. He can stomp through structures like they're nothing, smack his detail to decimate an entire block, and of course, fire his atomic breath when all else fails. He's defeated countless monsters and come out the other side unscathed. There seems to be no limit to his abilities and strength on screen.

However, for all of those moments where Godzilla seemed truly overpowered, there are also moments where he didn't quite live up to his name. Whether he lost a fight to a stronger monster or even lost his life, Godzilla hasn't always been the King of the Monsters that the movies continuously call him. As we approach the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters film in just a few months, we're looking back at 10 times Godzilla was OP and 10 times he didn't quite live up to his name.

20 OP: FLIGHT WITH ATOMIC BREATH

As if it wasn't impressive enough that Godzilla could shoot atomic breath to destroy just about anything in his path, he would discover another use for it in Godzilla Vs Hedorah. It seemed that Hedorah would be able to make his escape by flying away, but Godzilla proved that not even the air was enough to stop him from accomplishing his goal.

Admittedly, the execution is extremely goofy and makes for one of the most ridiculous scenes in the entire franchise. That said, there's something wonderfully cathartic about seeing Godzilla propel himself through the air. He truly has an answer for just about anything.

19 DIDN'T LIVE UP: DISINTEGRATED

When Godzilla was first introduced back in 1954, he made a bang on the big screen. The people of Japan were horrified to see all the destruction one monster would cause. Because of this, there was a scientist called to action to try and stop him. Creating some sort of Oxygen Destroyer machine, it was theorized that was the only way that Godzilla could be destroyed.

Eventually deploying the machine, the people were thrilled to see that it worked against Godzilla. Not only did it stop the monster in its tracks, but it disintegrated him, leaving nothing but a skeleton on the ocean floor.

18 OP: GOING FOR THE EYES

Godzilla wasn't the only monster to grace cinemas at the time. As a matter of fact, many of his greatest opponents were created by taking his DNA and having some sort of alteration done to it. When Godzilla gets exposed to energy from another world, it leads to the creation of Space Godzilla in Godzilla Vs SpaceGodzilla.

The two share an epic battle, but the latter seems to have a strength advantage. However, Godzilla decides that he's not going to play nice and goes straight for the monster's eyes. He succeeds, leading to Space Godzilla being weakened enough to lose the fight.

17 DIDN'T LIVE UP: FIRST FIGHT AGAINST KING GHIDORAH

Things were different when King Ghidorah entered the picture. This three-headed dragon was so strong that Godzilla found he couldn't take it on alone. Ghidorah actually managed to defeat Godzilla in their first encounter, leading the monster to a different strategy.

In order to defeat the villainous dragon once and for all, Godzilla called on Mothra and Rodan to fight at his side. Together, the three of them were strong enough to beat King Ghidorah, but that essentially meant that Godzilla was no longer King of the Monsters. There was one that proved to be better than even him with all his might.

16 OP: CAUSING A TSUNAMI

The 2014 Godzilla movie brought the King of Monsters back in a big way. With modern special effects, the film was able to show just how massive the monster was and what sorts of impact he would have on the world. The scene where he first arrives on the beach is a frightening one. After Godzilla swims through the ocean, he rises to the surface.

His sheer size causes the water level to change so drastically that a massive tsunami floods the city. We see many people desperately running away before swept off by the incoming water. Keep in mind that Godzilla did all that by accident.

15 DIDN'T LIVE UP: NUCLEAR MELTDOWN

Essentially created by nuclear technology, Godzilla himself is a bit radioactive. During his battle against Destroyah, Godzilla was pushed to his limit. He exerted himself to a level that he never had before. This caused so much pressure on his heart that it began to cause a nuclear meltdown. He kept fighting, though, which caused his body to essentially collapse on itself.

Godzilla won the fight, but he destroyed himself in the process. This means that one of Godzilla's greatest weaknesses is himself. Give him a strong enough fight, and he'll eventually go down for the count. It's that simple.

14 OP: BEATING THE GAUNTLET

Godzilla: Final Wars was a final chapter for Godzilla, which meant that Toho was pulling out all the stops to make him go out in a blaze of glory. Bringing back a lot of the monsters from other films, Godzilla was re-awakened to clean up shop and get rid of the monsters.

Not only does Godzilla succeed in doing so, he never seems to lose a step. He defeats monsters one by one before getting into a fight with Keizer Ghidorah for the final act. The fact that he can go through a gauntlet of his greatest foes just proves how strong Godzilla is.

13 DIDN'T LIVE UP: WRAPPED BY MOTHRA SPAWN

When Mothra awoke to attack the world, she and Godzilla got into an iconic battle. However, Godzilla was the one who came out victorious, leaving Mothra battered and broken. Mothra was far from unprepared, though. She had some children of her own, who wanted revenge on Godzilla. They fired some sticky string on Godzilla, which proved extremely effective.

The King of Monsters was trapped and unable to move. Then, he fell down a cliff and was submerged in water. After all that fighting, it turned out to be larvae of Mothra that defeated Godzilla, which is a bit embarrassing.

12 OP: DROP KICK

Godzilla Vs Megalon had one of the most ridiculous moments in the entire franchise. It's often cited as an example of how silly the franchise could be. During his titular fight, Godzilla managed to get a drop kick. However, it's not as simple as a short hop before extending his legs out. Instead, Godzilla is essentially moving at high speeds solely by the use of his tail.

He slides across the ground, stomach up, before inevitably landing a serious hit on his opponent. It's one of those moments that you have to watch to fully understand -- you won't regret it.

11 DIDN'T LIVE UP: WEAKENED BY THE MUTOS

Godzilla has proven that multiple opponents aren't enough to bring him down, but the MUTOs in 2014's Godzilla proved effective when working together. Despite Godzilla being strong enough to overcome one of them with ease, the same can't be said for when he fought two of them at the same time.

They nearly beat the monster, who wouldn't have won without a bit of help from the humans. However, once Godzilla got the upper hand, the fight drastically turned in his favor. The stellar tail smack and atomic breath sequence were some of the best moments in the entire franchise.

10 OP: BODY SLAM

Godzilla Vs Megaguirus had one of the most ridiculous moves of the King of Monsters alongside his famous drop kick. In this film, Godzilla was going against another dinosaur who seemed to have the upper hand at every turn. During their battle, Godzilla pulled out his most impressive move yet: the body slam.

He launched himself in the air, then the camera shifts to Megaguirus' perspective, who sees just a massive lizard hurling toward him. Godzilla slams into the monster, practically claiming his victory at that point. Is there anything that Godzilla can't do? He's a shoe-in for WWE with this move!

9 DIDN'T LIVE UP: LOSING HIS BRAIN

In Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II, we learn a crucial new fact about Godzilla: he has two brains. Perhaps that's the reason he can perform ridiculous attacks. More to the point, this new Mechagodzilla was designed with this exploit in mind. During their iconic battle, Mechagodzilla and Godzilla trade blows. However, it's the former who gains the upper hand by essentially destroying Godzilla's second brain.

Once that happens, Godzilla becomes effectively paralyzed, leaving him open to every single attack Mechagodzilla can throw at him. It was a bit of an odd addition to Godzilla lore, but with robots and space lizards, we can't be too critical.

8 OP: BEATING THE BEST TECHNOLOGY

With so many powerful monsters in its arsenal, Toho decided that it was time to go back to basics with The Return of Godzilla. The King of Monsters effectively had his throne again, being the threat that the world was trying to defend itself against. The Japanese had the Super X aircraft that was supposedly the only thing that could protect them.

However, Godzilla proved that even the best technology couldn't bring him down. He just roared and kept walking. Even in 2014's Godzilla, just about every attack the U.S. threw at him was ineffective. He didn't even seem like he felt one blow.

7 DIDN'T LIVE UP: SWALLOWED A SUBMARINE

In Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla's impressive strength became his downfall. During a fight with King Ghidorah, a submarine tries to take down Godzilla. The King of Monsters simply swallows the sub to get rid of it. However, the people in the sub fire a missile while inside Godzilla's throat, putting a hole through his neck.

Godzilla would later try to use his atomic breath, which came out of his wound instead of his mouth. He tried using it again, but it only caused him to explode. Thus was the end of Godzilla (for the time).

6 OP: FLICKING BARAGON ASIDE

In GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla is shown to be the antagonist, with the rest of the kaiju working together to try and stop him. One monster that tries to beat him is Baragon, who doesn't stand a chance. The fight lasts all but four minutes, with the King of Monsters never losing his advantage.

Not only does Godzilla throw Baragon through the air, he just bats the monster aside like he's a regular house fly. It's not until Mothra and King Ghidorah enter the picture that anyone stands a chance at defeating Godzilla. From the opening moments, people knew that Baragon wasn't going to win.

5 DIDN'T LIVE UP: HIDING IN NEW YORK CITY

1998's Godzilla film is maligned for many reasons, and chief among them is the portrayal of the titular monster. Throughout the film, people aren't able to find Godzilla, because he manages to hide in New York like a pansy. Keep in mind that this is the same creature who outlandishly pummels other giant monsters, destroying buildings in the process.

Suddenly he's hiding in New York City and creating baby versions of himself so the movie can be some weird precursor to Cloverfield. It makes Godzilla seem more like a generic monster and less like the iconic combatant who defeated countless foes bigger than himself.

4 OP: ENACTING VENGEANCE

Destroyah was the one creature that seemed to be the perfect match for Godzilla, outperforming the King of Monsters in just about every way. However, Destroyah made one mistake: he made Godzilla mad. By destroying Godzilla's son, Destroyah sent the giant lizard into a frenzy where he had to get his revenge one way or another.

Godzilla's anger and rage was strong enough to take down Destroyah, thus proving that there was no obstacle that could truly stand in Godzilla's way forever. That said, it was this battle that led to the demise of Godzilla through overexertion. At least he went out like a champ.

3 DIDN'T LIVE UP: GETS HIS POWER DRAINED

During the finale of Godzilla: Final Wars, the monster fights Keizer Ghidorah, who is a powered-up version of the classic yet dangerous King Ghidorah. Considering Ghidorah managed to beat Godzilla in his standard form, Keizer proved a much greater challenge. Among the many hits that Keizer gets on Godzilla, he also managed to drain some of the monster's power.

Godzilla does eventually break free, but only with the help of the Gotengo warship. Had that warship never been present during the battle, Godzilla easily would've lost. It was a spectacular finale to the Godzilla arc of that time, but it does say something that he needed an extra boost of power.

2 OP: ATOMIC BREATH IN THE MOUTH

Monsters are always weaker on the inside in the Godzilla series. When Godzilla was going against an evil plant-like version of himself, the only way he came out on top was by using his atomic breath when it opened its mouth. This strategy would prove effective, as Godzilla would use it a few more times.

In the 2014 Godzilla movie, that was the money shot. Godzilla holds open a MUTO's mouth while spewing his atomic breath inside, locking another victory for himself. Atomic breath itself is an overpowered ability in Godzilla's arsenal, but using it in these creative ways make it even stronger.

1 DIDN'T LIVE UP: GETTING RENAMED

The 1998 Godzilla movie was hated by Japan a lot. It got so extensive that they decided to make the 1998 version its own character. It was titled "Zilla", as the creators felt that the "God" part of the name wasn't deserving of that character.

To add insult to injury, Zilla was included in Godzilla: Final Wars as one of the kaiju the King of Monsters had to fight. The fight lasted just a few short minutes, though, as he made short work of this imposter. To sum it all up, the 1998 Godzilla movie is canon, but it doesn't star the real Godzilla.
