An audience's willing suspension of disbelief is a narrative technique coined by the great Romantic-era poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This principle claims that authors should strive to portray fantastical stories in such a way that readers will voluntarily overlook the plausibility of a narrative for the sake of its message and themes.

Authors and storytellers have used this narrative technique ever since, with varying degrees of success. Sometimes, authors write themselves into a corner and need to move the narrative but have no time or creativity to do so in a believable way. At these moments, authors include events and details that are so impossibly convenient that readers can't help but question their suspension of disbelief.

10 Satoko Injected Mion & Mion Didn’t Notice? (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Sotsu)

satoko hojo's eyes glowing in higurashi

In the Wataakashi-hen arc of Higurashi: When They Cry – Sotsu, Satoko Hojo prompts something that's never occurred in Higurashi thus far, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In her latest bid to force Rika Furude to unequivocally accept Hinamizawa as her home, Satoko injects Mion Sonozaki with H173 to artificially induce level 5 Hinamizawa Syndrome. Not only has Mion never shown high levels of Hinamizawa Syndrome before this arc, but Satoko supposedly injected her in broad daylight while she was purchasing drinks from a vending machine. How did Mion not notice?

9 Cherryton Academy Apparently Has A Security Guard? (Beastars)

legoshi meeting rokume in beastars

There's a lot about Rokume the rattlesnake security guard that doesn't make any sense in Beastars. For starters, viewers are just expected to believe that a massive rattlesnake that doesn't follow the anthropomorphic conventions of the other characters is, apparently, the one and only security guard for Cherryton Academy. If that's not questionable enough on its own, Rokume is also apparently a secret and almost no one knows about her? The true motive for adding Rokume seems to conveniently give Legoshi the courage and go-ahead to investigate Tem's murder more closely.

8 The Entire Plot Of Steins;Gate 0 Is Dubious

Okabe And Mayuri Steins;Gate Walking Down Street

While it's true that Steins;Gate 0 is meant to tell the side of the story where Rintaro Okabe doesn't deceive the world and lets Kurisu Makise die, it's precisely because he fails that the series makes no sense. The original Steins;Gate presents Okabe as an irreverent, starry-eyed dreamer, so it's really hard to accept the deflated mess that Okabe is throughout Steins;Gate 0.

It's also pretty convenient that Okabe just so happens to run into Maho Hiyajo, who also just so happens to have been one of Kurisu's best friends at Viktor Chondria University. Oh, and Maho is connected to Alexis Leskinen, one of the agents responsible for fostering World War III.

7 Rika & Satoko Gave Up On Each Other That Quick? (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Gou)

Anime Higurashi When They Cry Sotsu Anime Key Art With Satoko And Rika

Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou is the reboot sequel series to the original Higurashi 2006 anime. Fans initially thought Gou was going to be a retelling but were pleasantly surprised to see a new story unfold. But there's something about the new story that doesn't make much sense. Satoko Hojo and Rika Furude are best friends who historically protect each other in the best and worst of times. That's why it's so difficult to believe that Rika didn't try harder to help Satoko fit in at St. Lucia Academy. And it's just as unbelievable that Satoko would so easily accept murdering her friends just to make Rika bend to her will.

6 No One Realized That Franchouchou Are Zombies? (Zombie Land Saga)

The Idol group Franchouchou performing in Zombie Land Saga Revenge

Zombie Land Saga is obviously a slapstick parody of idol anime, so the story's events should be taken with a grain of salt. But at the end of the second season, Zombie Land Saga Revenge, Franchouchou's true zombie faces are accidentally revealed to their audience... and no one says a word. In fact, the children of the audience are completely unafraid and refuse to believe they are zombies. It makes for a heartwarming moment and a great message about not judging by appearances, but it's really hard to swallow the idea that no one made a fuss about it.

5 Louis Became A Mafia Boss Just Like That? (Beastars)

legoshi holding louis as the shishigumi boss in beastars

Beastars is notable for its depiction of society as a fragile, softspoken understanding of the hierarchy between herbivores and carnivores. But it's because carnivores run society that it's difficult to believe that the Shishigumi accepted Louis as their boss right off the bat. It's later revealed that the Shishigumi were evenly divided on whether to recruit Louis or eat him. Louis lucked out since a senior member of the Shishigumi, Ibuki, coincidentally holds strong views about improving the Shishigumi's image in the eyes of herbivores.

4 Yuji Is The Perfect Container For Sukuna? (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Sukuna, using Yuji's body, sneers menacingly

It's rather convenient that a complete novice like Yuji Itadori can contain a powerful curse like Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen. Sukuna is a cursed spirit who's over 1000 years old and has been a source of strife and fear in the spiritual community for decades.

Jujutsu leaders are so terrified of Sukuna's might that Yuji is given a death sentence whether or not he's able to contain Sukuna even after all 20 fingers are consumed. It's quite a coincidence that Yuji can contain such a powerful spirit despite having no background in jujutsu sorcery.

3 Deku Identified Gentle Criminal Through Several Convenient Coincidences (My Hero Academia)

Deku struggling against Gentle Criminal in My Hero Academia.

The fight between Gentle Criminal and Izuku "Deku" Midoriya in My Hero Academia relied on several convenient circumstances. Not only did Deku accidentally stumble across Gentle Criminal's social media videos, but he also just so happened to watch a video that described in detail how Gentle Criminal goes about his capers. Deku was also coincidentally served some high-end tea that Gentle Criminal also happened to purchase from a café right before running into him. Deku then coincidentally manages to identify Gentle Criminal and figure out his next crime.

2 Inuyasha Is In The Right Place At The Right Time To Rescue Kikyo (Inuyasha)

inuyasha carrying kikyo

In Episode 47 of Inuyasha, Kikyo taunts Naraku for stalking her, claiming that it's Onigumo's yearning for Kikyo that keeps Naraku worried about her. Naraku, however, is dead set on revoking his once human heart so he chooses to send a giant Soul Collector to lure Kikyo to her death. Inuyasha conveniently notices the Soul Collector in the distance, which also alerted him to Kikyo's struggle. He steps in to save her, but she just as easily could have been sent back to the afterlife.

1 Yuji Just So Happens To Have The Same Taste In Women As Todo? (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Yuji and Toudou Posing JJK

Aoi Todo is infamous in Jujutsu Kaisen for his eccentric behavior and monstrous strength. He doesn't want to live a boring life around boring people, so he challenges any men he meets with a simple question: "What's your taste in women?" For Todo, it's tall women with big butts, like Jennifer Lawrence. Yuji Itadori coincidentally gives the exact same answer and actress, impressing Todo enough to take Yuji under his wing and train him to be a better fighter... right before a serious battle with Hanami, where Yuji's ability to use Black Flash greatly turns the tides of battle. Pretty convenient.
