Tim Drake - Robin logo design

Tim Drake's "R" symbol -- arguably just as iconic as Batman's bat logo -- debuted in 1991 on the cover of the first Robin mini-series. According to a blog post by famed letterer Todd Klein, the distinctive "R," as well as the entire Robin logo, were initially designed by Keith "Kez" Wilson, a writer and illustrator who worked for both DC and Marvel in the early '90s and also developed logos for Detective Comics and Green Lantern. Klein, as well as DC art director Curtis King, both added various aspects to the design.

The logo would prove to be immensely popular, and it decorated the covers of the three limited series that Tim received before he finally headlined an ongoing solo book in 1993. Penned primarily by Chuck Dixon, Robin would encompass a staggering 193 issues until it was canceled in 2009. Tim would go on to star in Red Robin, a 26-issue series that ended in 2011, and has not starred in a solo book since.

Tim Drake: Robin is written by Meghan Fitzmartin, who previously wrote a series of Tim Drake solo stories for Batman: Urban Legends focused on the character exploring his sense of identity and sexuality. These stories have since been collected in a one-shot anthology entitled DC Pride: Tim Drake Special.

The series features art by Riley Rossmo (Harley Quinn, Martian Manhunter) and goes on sale Sept. 27.
