Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2 has long languished in development, but now the director has confirmed he doesn't think it will end up getting made at all.

Burton is currently making the media rounds in support of his live-action Dumbo film. In an interview with USA TODAY Burton was asked about what was happening with the project, to which he responded, "Nothing, nothing."

He was then asked if the movie would happen. "I don't know. I doubt it," he said.

His doubt appears to have grounds, as a spokesperson for  Warner Bros. confirmed for USA Today that "the project isn’t in active development."

The original Beetlejuice was released in 1988 and earned $73.7 million on a budget of $15 million. The movie was well-received critically and has since gone on to become a cinema classic, with references to it appearing practically everywhere. Titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, a script for the sequel was started after the release of the original. However, the movie has experienced a number of starts and stops. Beetlejuice 2 was resurrected in 2017 with a new writer, but nothing seems to have come of that, and -- from the sounds of it -- the franchise might never see the long awaited sequel.
