"I took nature and science, and I synthesized."
Netlfix’s foray in producing sci-fi/fantasy movies continues with the release of the teaser trailer for Bong Joon-Ho’s fantasy film “Okja.” This is not the creator’s first time working in the sci-fi genre, having previously written and directed "Snowpiercer" and "The Host." Over the course of his career, Joon-Ho’s work has received critical acclaim for his unique and captivating films.
The movie, co-written by both Joon-Ho and Jon Ronson, the writer of “The Men Who Stare At Goats,” is described as a coming-of-age comedy-drama. The story follows a young girl, Mija, played by South Korean actress Ahn Seo-hyun, who lives the woods of the Gangwon Province of South Korea and is friends with a mysterious creature. The threat comes from an influential company, run by Tilda Swinton, hell-bent on acquiring the creature, otherwise known as Okja, to use as a means for genetic modification to assist with humanity’s obsession with image and self-promotion.
Joon-Ho has described Okja as "a very shy and introverted animal. It’s a unique animal that we’ve not seen before."
The teaser itself offers more questions than answers, but we do get to a few moments of Swinton and a fleeting glance of Okja, a rather big creature with large soulful eyes.
Released globally on June 28 on Netflix, “Okja” is directed by Bong Joon-Ho and stars Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, and Lily Collins. The film will also have a limited day and date theatrical release within the U.S.
