Released in 2020, Tiger King captivated audiences across the globe with its story of Joseph Schreibvogel, aka Joe Exotic, the former owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. A self-proclaimed expert in the world of big cats, Exotic was arrested in 2018 and imprisoned the following year for multiple accounts of animal abuse and for hiring two men to murder Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin.

The immense popularity of Tiger King, which debuted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when people across the world were sheltering in their homes, quickly spawned several follow-ups and spinoffs, including the Kate McKinnon-starring Joe Exotic from Peacock and the now-shelved Nicolas Cage-starring Tiger King show from Amazon Prime Video.

As for the Peacock project, McKinnon is slated to play Carole Baskin while Joe Exotic will be played by Hedwig and the Angry Inch and How to Talk to Girls at Parties' John Cameron Mitchell. "I’m thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero," Mitchell said when he was cast. "Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world."

"Joe Exotic is shaping up to be a bold and provocative drama and perfectly suited for Peacock, where we can push the envelope and truly bring the story to life in a way that we would be unable to do on broadcast television," NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Chairman of Entertainment Content Susan Rovner said when the series shifted exclusively to Peacock. "Moving Joe Exotic to Peacock exclusively is just one example of the strengths of our new structure, which gives us the ability to let the art dictate the platform and not the other way around."

Tiger King 2 has yet to receive a release date.
