Thunderbolts was announced in June 2022, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiling the film's cast at Disney's D23 Expo the following September. The team, expected to be assembled by CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), will consist of six members: Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Harrison Ford is also expected to reprise his role as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from Captain America: New World Order.

The Losers of the MCU

Although Feige has stated that the Thunderbolts will be viewed by the public as Earth's mightiest heroes, Harbour recently teased that the upcoming team will go through some growing pains and will not be a well-oiled machine like the Avengers were shown to be in later MCU films. "We're like losers, which I like," Harbour said. "We're like, you know, the losers. And I think it's fun to watch us just mess everything up. I think that's the spectrum. I think it's very funny, but there's also a lot of pathos in that." The actor is also excited to work with Pugh again after Black Widow, teasing that Thunderbolts will further develop their troubled father-daughter dynamic.

Harbour also revealed that he has spoken with Thunderbolts screenwriter Eric Pearson about "the arc of the movie and how it functions...and it’s super cool. The idea is really cool." Despite having not yet seen a script for the film, Harbour promised that Thunderbolts will be funny, weird and action-packed. "And then we're also going to drop a bomb, which is cool," he added. In the comics, the Thunderbolts are former villains who accept perilous missions from the government. While more specific plot details for Thunderbolts remain under lock and key, some fans have also theorized that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is now playing in theaters, has teased the team's first mission.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts is slated to open in theaters on July 24, 2024.
