Marvel Comics is bringing together some of its most powerful villains and antiheroes in a Thunderbolts miniseries for the King in Black event. While previous iterations of the Thunderbolts have been led by the likes of Baron Zemo and Norman Osborn, King in Black's version is assembled by Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk, the current mayor of New York City, to protect the city from invading symbiote dragons.

King in Black: Thunderbolts by writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Juan Ferreyra features Taskmaster, Rhino, Mr. Fear, Star and Batroc the Leaper. What potentially makes this Thunderbolts team the most powerful yet is the addition of Star, who is the human host of the Reality Stone.

"Thunderbolts is one of the best concepts Marvel has ever produced. It's a book that constantly reinvents itself in fun ways and it's a real honor to carry on that tradition," Rosenberg told SYFY Wire. "I think we have a really wild premise and unique team, and letting them cut loose during the epic events of King In Black is going to be a really fun trial by fire for them."

The cover, preview pages and solicitation for King in Black: Thunderbolts #1 can be found below.

King in Black: Thunderbolts #1 (of 3)

  • Matthew Rosenberg (W)
  • Juan Ferreyra (A)
  • Kyle Hotz (CA)
  • The Thunderbolts face a tough decision after Knull invades Earth. Fight or die.
  • Mayor Fisk tasks them with saving the city or die trying…or die right then and there. The fate of the entire world may rest in the hands of the absolute worst people in the Marvel Universe.

King in Black is the next installment of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman's Venom saga. The event teases heroes such as the Avengers and X-Men coming together to stand against Knull, with Eddie Brock's climactic standoff with the terrifying villain looming in the background. King in Black is a successor to Absolute Carnage, which resulted in Eddie Brock and Venom releasing Knull from his cosmic prison, with the villain now making his way towards Earth for revenge.

Marvel has released its first wave of King in Black tie-ins, which include a team-up between former rivals Iron Man and Doctor Doom as they battle a Knull-controlled Santa Claus. The second wave of tie-ins should officially be announced with Marvel's January 2021 solicitations later this month.
