Abner "Abe" Jenkins was a mechanical engineer when he created his first high-powered armor that launched his super-villain career, but it wasn't until he joined the Thunderbolts as MACH-1 that the new hero really began to add to his armory as he continued to modify and upgrade his new costumed identity.

Abe's various codenames have changed along with the versions of his armor, so when the character appeared in the most recent Thunderbolts series as MACH-X, he had designed, built, and worn over 10 different armors during his long costumed career that went from a lackey in the Masters of Evil to a leader of the Thunderbolts.

10 BEETLE MK I

Abe Jenkins first appeared in the pages of 1964's Strange Tales #123 as an unhappy factory mechanic who spent months gathering parts to create a new helmet that amplified his strength, which allowed him to wear the heavy armor he had constructed.

As the Beetle, Jenkins armor featured extended "magno-suction beetle grippers" on his fingers and heavy steel wings that allowed him to fly, though the bulk design of the suit left a lot of room for improvement.

9 MACH-VII

There's a bit of confusion over Abe's last armor seen before his evolution into MACH-X, as his MACH-IV armor had been erroneously labeled as the MACH-VII during the Standoff event, yet fans had seen a different version of the MACH-VII armor already.

Abe appeared alongside some of his former Sinister Syndicate teammates in Superior Foes of Spider-Man, though the bulky, featureless armor he wore as Boomerang's parole officer was almost as bad (and as short-lived) as his career as a parole officer.

8 MACH-2

When Hawkeye took over the Thunderbolts and attempted to help with their reform, he asked Jenkins to turn himself in for the murder he had committed as the Beetle, and after some time he was returned to the T-Bolts to operate in secret.

He created a new armor with the help of Techno (in disguise as Ogre) who altered his features to controversially become an African-American named Matthew Davis. MACH-2's new armor was a basic upgrade of his original heroic suit, though it was much more streamlined and looked more fighter jet than superhero.

7 MACH-3

After the loss of his MACH-2 armor due to the regulations of the Thunderbolts' presidential pardon, Abe Jenkins (in his Matthew Davis identity) was brought back into action alongside Melissa Gold/Songbird when Graviton threatened the world.

Abe and Songbird were equipped by the V-Battalion in order to assist Citizen V, and Abe revealed that his new MACH-3 armor was more advanced than anything he had previously created. MACH-3 would become a hero alongside some of the Thunderbolts on Counter-Earth after the battle with Graviton.

6 BEETLE MK II

After a number of defeats at the hands of heroes like the Human Torch and Spider-Man, Jenkins decided to upgrade his criminal endeavors and used his stolen fortune to enlist the services of the Tinkerer, who helped him create a new Beetle armor.

The new Beetle armor was reinforced with a durable metal that was able to channel an electric discharge which he could also fire from his gauntlets, and the wings were now retractable and housed in casings on his back, making Jenkins a legitimate criminal threat for years until he joined the Thunderbolts.

5 MACH-X

When Jenkins rejoined with the Thunderbolts under Winter Soldier's watch, he created a new suit of armor that took a different design approach from the previous versions and also skipped a few designations, as he became known as MACH-X.

This was potentially a reference to all of the armors he had worn in his time, and his new suit likewise incorporated all of the various weapons and flight enhancements of his former designs. The MACH-X armor was unfortunately destroyed in battle with Baron Zemo's Army of Evil, and Abe was left for dead in the arctic.

4 MACH-V

Jenkins would eventually become one of the heads of security at the superhuman prison known as the Raft, which also served as the headquarters for the revamped Thunderbolts Program under the leadership of Luke Cage.

Abe upgraded and redesigned his suit into the Mechanized Aerial Combat Harness, which was a heavy-duty version of his former armors that was equipped with increased firepower and other riot-control features he used as MACH-V.

3 BEETLE MK III

During Jenkins' time in prison after he willingly turned himself in, Jenkins was manipulated into creating a new suit of Beetle armor that he would also secretly pilot on missions for the Commission on Superhuman Activities.

The new tank-like Beetle armor featured highly-advanced offensive and defensive weapons systems as he now had the full resources of the government, and his new wings were made from gravitronic spatial distortions that allowed them to cut through almost anything. Leila Davis also briefly wore this armor, though Graviton crushed her inside it.

2 MACH-IV

After Jenkins served his time for his criminal past as the Beetle, he decided to create a new flight harness and form the New Thunderbolts as MACH-IV, with the goal of giving other former criminals the same chance to reform.

While he was forced to use the resources of Baron Stucker and Hydra to create his armor and fund his new team initially, he always planned to eventually turn on his benefactor and take down Hydra. The MACH-IV armor was also worn during the Standoff event, though it was labeled as MACH-VII.

1 MACH-1

While some of Abe Jenkins' later armors may have featured more advanced technology, it was his first suit that was co-created alongside the Fixer/Techno that remains his best suit, both for its design and longevity.

The Mobile Armored Cyber-Harness which led to Jenkins' new heroic identity of MACH-1 was designed to replicate the capabilities of a fighter jet by combining "maneuverability with shattering firepower," though his suit was loaded with non-lethal weaponry to better fit the Thunderbolts' initial ruse as heroes.
