Batman: Three Jokers will present the Clown Prince of Crime like you've never seen him before. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, writer Geoff Johns revealed the miniseries would be published in 46-page, prestige format issues and explained how it became his and artist Jason Fabok's quintessential Joker story.

"Three 46-page issues. Prestige format. Much like the original Killing Joke. We wanted to harken back to this kind of new, you know -- since The Killing Joke was published, there's been so much expansion in the Bat family and so many things that have happened since then, and [Jason Fabok] and I really wanted to -- if we're going to tell a Batman story and a Joker story, we were like, 'We've got to tell the best, most emotional story that we possibly can, something that's going to change their relationship with the Joker and how you see the Joker forever,'" Johns told CBR. "It's based on an emotional journey... it's not plot. It's really about character... This is our Joker story. This is it. So we've got to tell the best Joker story that we possibly can."

Three Jokers will be released under DC’s brand new Black Label imprint. Black Label, it’s been explained, is specifically designed for more “edgy” stories that exist outside of the mainline DC Universe continuity — but, as Johns explained, that might not always be the case. During discussions at various DC-run panels at the convention, Black Label was likened to stories like The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke — stories that may not intentionally exist within the constraints of continuity upon release, but are eventually folded into the bigger picture based on success or popularity with fans.

While Batman: Three Jokers doesn’t currently have a release date, Johns indicated at his SDCC panel that he hopes the miniseries will debut sometime this winter.
