Thor: The Dark World

"The Best Man Holiday" may have had a great Friday, but "Thor: The Dark World" had a better overall weekend. Variety reports that the latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe stayed on top of the North American box office with $38.5 million.

"The Best Man Holiday," which opened on Friday, came in at No. 2 with $30.6 million - well above the $17 million it cost to make.

"The Dark World," which has made $147 million domestically, crossed another milestone, as it blew past the $449 million the first film made in global sales. So far "Thor: The Dark World" has made $479.8 million worldwide.

Both "Thor" and "The Best Man Holiday" can expect tough competition next week, as "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens.

In other box office news, "Gravity," which opened in October, passed the $500 million mark at the global box office, as it added $6.3 million to its North American total this weekend. The film, which stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, has made $240 million domestically and $261 million overseas.
