In "To Quote a Phrase," I spotlight memorable quotes from comic books.

I continue a month of "To Quote a Phrase" by spotlighting a legendary moment from Walter Simonson's Thor run, where an old Thor villain got a major redemption.

Let's quickly set the scene. Pretty much every Norse god was called back to Asgard to help defend the realm from the destructive force of Surtur. One of Thor's oldest villains is Skurge the Executioner, who was sort of the enforcer to another one of Thor's oldest villains, the Enchantress. Skurge also loved Enchantress, but she just treated him like a toady.

After she blew him off again following the Surtur battle, Skurge was all moping around.

Thor, meanwhile, put together a team to go rescue some mortal souls who were trapped in Hel. One of the other gods had acquired some modern human weapons (during some recent time on Midgard)...

Skurge asked Thor if he could come along on the mission...

Hela messed with Skurge a bit on the mission, trying to make him think that Enchantress was taking him back. Skurge was so angry that he destroyed one of Hela's ships while losing his trusted axe. The group saved the mortals, but Hela's forces were chasing them hard and basically, someone had to hold them off while the others crossed the Gjallerbru bridge. Thor, naturally, volunteered, but he was suddenly knocked out by Skurge!

Skurge wanted to do something noble in his life...

This leads to an epic sequence by Simonson, with some of the greatest sequential work of the whole decade...

Few people were exactly Skurge fans at the time, but by the time the issue ended, EVERYONE loved Skurge!

And THE quote, of course, is when Skurge is talked about, they all say "He stood alone at Gjallerbru"...

And that answer IS enough.

Okay, folks, if you care to suggest cool comic book quotes that you'd like to see spotlighted here, drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com. There's a decent enough chance that if you think the quote in question is super cool than I, too, will find it super cool and feature it here. Not a 100% chance, though, of course. Let's say roughly a 60% chance. I do need a whole month's worth of these quotes, after all!
