Valkyrie has been described as a real 'badass' and a pants-wearing tomboy in Thor: Ragnarok, so it's no surprise Tessa Thompson undertook some significant physical preparations while getting ready for the role.

In a recent interview with CBR, Thompson was asked how serious her workout regimen for the film was. In response, the actor explained just how much she bulked up, saying,  "I gained about 15 pounds of muscle mass, which yeah, it was a lot for me."

"I like sort of bucking this conventional idea of a woman is beautiful or sexy if she’s sort of thin," she added, explaining that she was totally comfortable with bulking up for the role. "She’s felt, but you can’t really see her strength. I like the idea that she can just be ripped, like Valkyrie is in the comics. Yeah, I found that sort of essential, that not really caring about how I looked, but caring more about how I felt. I felt so strong, and in my skin."

"It felt great! Yeah, it felt great," Thompson continued. "Particularly for the five months that I was there, and I was working on the stage where did all the stunt choreography and the likes of folks like Chris Hemsworth. It felt good to be able to be on par with everyone around me."

Despite how serious Thompson took her training, she admits she couldn't quite match Chris Hemsworth's daily food intake. "I certainly tried," she said. "But, I couldn’t, actually. I gave it a good effort."

Thor: Ragnarok opens Nov. 3 nationwide and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Karl Urban as Skurge.
