She-Hulk: Attorney at Law director Anu Valia revealed why 2017's Thor: Ragnarok was such a major source of inspiration for the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Valia confirmed that she "[Looked] to what Taika Waititi did with Thor[: Ragnarok]" during an appearance on an episode of the Friends From Work podcast. Valia went on to explain, "Like, he balanced that so well. I think that was maybe, out of the Marvel films, that was like the most forefront of my mind... Even the technical thing of like improvising with a CGI character, that type of stuff. So personally, that movie was on my mind a lot. But I can't say that I created the tone or anything, but it was sorta like building off."

She-Hulk has received both praise and criticism for its comedic tone, which includes no small number of fourth-wall-breaking moments and over-the-top cameo appearances by celebrities such as Megan Thee Stallion. Her post-credits appearance in the third episode of She-Hulk drew mass responses from fans online after teaching Tatiana Maslany's titular hero to twerk.

Jameela Jamil, who plays Titania on the series, previously opened up about how she convinced Megan Thee Stallion to make an appearance. Jamil said, "I know Megan from Legendary and I know how legendary she is, and she's so smart and so funny and just such a star, and I'm such a fan. So I was preparing to come and do this when I was filming Legendary Season 2, and I just asked her, and she turned out to be a huge Marvel fan."

She-Hulk Is Pure Comedy

Kat Coiro, who directed the first four and final two episodes of She-Hulk, has also commented on the series' brand of non-traditional superhero storytelling. Coiro said, "So much of what I think is fresh about [She-Hulk] is it really is about a woman living a very regular life even though she happens to be imbued with these superpowers and so, while we play into some of the tropes of the genre – like villains! – we have the luxury of a series that doesn't have a ticking plot clock."

The first five episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are currently streaming on Disney+. New episodes premiere Thursdays.
