Early Design for Thor: Ragnarok’s Korg Was More Monstrous

According to some newly released concept art for Thor: Ragnarok, Korg was initially going to be far more monstrous.

Freelance concept artist Ian Joyner shared his early design on ArtStation, where Korg was “a bit more of a tough monster guy.” You can see that he looked more like a golem here, with big, rock-like appendages.

The coloring on Joyner’s version of the character is a little different than the final version. The artist decided to “tie [in] the yellow from the comic.” Korg, who initially appeared in 1962, has rock-like golden skin. In the film, he’s more of a cement gray, but Joyner wanted to give him “a hint of gold flake in his stone.”

This version was done before much was decided on how the character would be portrayed in the film. Joyner also noted that this was before Taika Waititi decided to voice him. The final version of Korg was created by another concept artist by the name of Tully Summers.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
