Early concept art from Thor: Ragnarok reveals a very different look for Cate Blanchett’s Hela. At one point, the goddess of death’s design included a visual allusion to a mourning veil. According to Andy Park, Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor, Hela’s veil went through numerous iterations before it was removed.

The concept drawings also show how other aspects of Hela’s outfit evolved over time, including both major and minor changes to her cape. The design for Hela’s cape seems to have shifted between a feather design and one that mirrors her horned helmet, which are both quite different from the open-shouldered design that eventually made its way into the movie.

Hela’s design was apparently a massive focus for Marvel Studios prior to release, as Park has released numerous pieces of concept art for the character. This includes Hela with her wolf mount, Fenris, and one with the goddess of death hovering against a hazy green backdrop.

Thor: Ragnarok is a production of Marvel Studios directed by Taika Waititi starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
