Thor: Ragnarok thundered its way to a massive $46 million Friday, including a $14.5 million from Thursday previews, and is set to top $100 million over the course of the weekend.
The Taika Waititi-helmed threequel is currently at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and is being hailed as the best Marvel film yet. Original estimates had the film set to open around over $100 million this weekend, however, updated estimates currently have the film set for an impressive $115-$120 million. That's quite a feat considering the first Thor film opened to $65.7 million back in 2011, while its sequel Thor: The Dark World opened to $85.7 million in 2013. Typically, franchises begin to see a drop off in later installments, however, in the case of Thor: Ragnarok, the film found a way to reinvent the franchise and is thriving thanks to excellent word of mouth.
Overseas, the film is doing just as well. As of Thursday, the film has earned $164.5 million at the international box office, including $4.4 million from Germany on Tuesday. Numbers have yet to be reported from China and Japan, however, it's expected that Thor: Ragnarok should cross $400 million at the worldwide box office by end of Sunday.
In theaters nationwide, director Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Karl Urban as Skurge.
