The following contains spoilers for Thor #28, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Thor's bout with a foe both demonic and symbiotic proves that one can draw blood from a stone.

Written by Donny Cates and Al Ewing with art by Salvador Larroca, Thor #28 is the second part of the "Venom of Asgard" arc featuring a team-up between the God of Thunder and Venom's Eddie Brock, the King in Black. The two join forces to fight Darkoth the Death-Demon, who is under the control of a symbiote child spawned by Bedlam, a rival King in Black. The symbiote uses the Promethium merged with Darkoth's body to forge a red version of Thor's hammer Mjolnir. After "Hellnir" and Mjolnir collide during the fight, Thor's hammer begins to bleed golden Od's blood -- the blood of Odin.

Thor 28 Mjolnir Od's Blood Odin

Why Is Odin Trapped Within Thor's Hammer?

When Thor was younger and still learning how to wield Mjolnir, Odin told his son that dwelling within the weapon are the souls of the dwarves that died forging it. During a battle with the God of Hammers (Mjolnir merged with the villainous Mangog), Odin sacrificed himself so that what remained of the Odin-Force could power up Thor to put an end to the conflict. Thor destroyed Mjolnir, but after it was reforged by the angels of Heven, he discovered that Odin's spirit now rested within the hammer, allowing him to hear his father's voice.

Odin has been along for the ride on Thor's adventures since his death, previously helping his son during Thor's "Banner of War" crossover with Marvel's ongoing Hulk series. The event showed that now anyone can wield Mjolnir and the power of Thor that comes with it, so long as Odin's spirit gives them permission and deems them worthy. The hammer bleeding Odin's blood is the latest change made to the weapon in comics.

The Mysteries of Marvel's Thor Series, Explained

The reason why Odin now haunts Mjolnir is that he is unable to rest in Valhalla. When his spirit arrived to the Asgardian afterlife, he found its gates broken open and its halls empty of the souls that should be present. What has happened to Valhalla marks another mystery for the Thor title, being that the God of Thunder has also been experiencing visions of Thanos wielding an Infinity Stone-embedded Mjolnir, revealed to be the future cause of Thor's death by the Black Winter. Following "Venom of Asgard," Thor's story continues in the Thanos: Death Notes one-shot out in late Nov. 2022.

Along with Cates, Ewing and Larroca, Thor #28 features colors by Edgar Delgado, letters and designs by VC's Joe Sabino, main cover artwork by Nic Klein and variant cover artwork by Greg Smallwood. The issue is now on sale from Marvel Comics.
