Taika Waititi broke the Marvel Cinematic Universe mold with Thor: Ragnarok, and he likely intends to do the same with Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to premiere in 2022. Few details have been confirmed about Thor’s upcoming film, but fans are already speculating about who might make an appearance, with many hoping to see Darcy Lewis again. Darcy was one of the standout characters in the early Thor films, and she would fit perfectly with Waititi’s comedic directorial style.
Darcy is easily one of the funniest characters produced by the MCU, and she is definitely one of the most humorous characters in the Thor franchise. With her dry sense of humor and Dennings’ background in comedy, she would be an excellent addition to the cast. Dennings can create characters with magnetism while also representing the everyday viewer, as seen in Two Broke Girls.
This essence is also perfectly captured in Darcy. One of Darcy's standout scenes in Thor: The Dark World occurs when Darcy abruptly interrupts Jane's date. Instead of simply tapping her on the shoulder and actively working to keep her arrival quiet, she seeks to make her presence known by snacking from the dinner table and loudly discussing Jane's personal life. This scene exhibits her character's persona brilliantly, and it's a moment similar to the style of humor that Waititi has become known for.
Darcy has no filter and says whatever she thinks. A character with such a distinctive personality would set the new film apart and further Waititi's vision. Unlike the majority of characters in the MCU who operate with a certain level of intensity and seriousness, Darcy is entirely unique, adding an element of levity to every scene she is in.
Natalie Portman has already confirmed that her character, Jane Foster, will officially become a superhero in Thor: Love and Thunder. As Jane’s best friend, Darcy might serve as a voice for the audience as Jane grows into her new powers. Jane is fairly introspective and contemplative as a character, but Darcy is far more laid-back. While Jane is likely to take on her new superhero status with solemn intensity, Darcy would no doubt offer lighthearted commentary on the situation, so it would be wildly entertaining to watch Darcy's shock as Jane experiments with her new abilities.
Although Darcy was not in Thor: Ragnarok, Dennings is still working within the MCU and is set to appear in the upcoming mini-series, WandaVision. With this return, Marvel may be planning to have her appear in other future projects; however, if Dennings is expecting to be a member of the cast for Thor: Love and Thunder, she is keeping it to herself. As of November 2020, she has only told fans that she's currently unsure of her role in the upcoming film.
With the film still two years away from appearing on the big screen, Dennings' possible role in the film is unclear. Thor: Ragnarok was made to be a serious addition to the MCU canon while also acting almost like a parody of Marvel films as a whole. Waititi is likely to continue to use this style for his next MCU project, and there are few characters who embody Waititi's sarcastic cleverness better than Darcy Lewis. No matter what her role is in her next Marvel venture, it is sure to be brilliant.
