Marvel's God of Thunder will return in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth solo Thor movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is back at the helm the film, which he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great).

Thor: Love and Thunder will pick up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which concluded with Thor leaving Earth to travel with the Guardians of the Galaxy (sans Gamora) and appointing Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard. With production on the film officially begun in Sidney, Australia, here's a guide to Love and Thunder's confirmed and all-but official cast, as well as the characters they're playing.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Updated July 30, 2021, to reflect confirmation of Luke Hemsworth's return following his cameo in Thor: Ragnorak.

Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth)

The son of Odin, former King of Asgard, and an Avenger, Thor Odinson joined the MCU in 2011's Thor and has since evolved from an arrogant would-be ruler into a noble and far more humble warrior. However, for much of Avengers: Endgame, Thor struggled with guilt over his failure to stop Thanos from snapping half of all life out of existence, along with post-traumatic stress from losing so many loved ones over the years. As such, Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to find Thor -- once again played by Chris Hemsworth -- searching for a new purpose following Thanos' defeat.

Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson)

Valkyrie made her MCU debut in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, serving as a slave trader for the Grandmaster on Sakaar. The sole survivor of a group of female Asgardian warriors known as the Valkyrie, she had turned to drinking to deal with her post-traumatic stress, but ultimately teamed up with Thor and Bruce Banner to battle Hela, Thor's sister and the Goddess of Death. Valkyrie actor Tessa Thompson teased the character's role in Thor: Love and Thunder at 2019's Comic-Con International, saying, "As new King [of Asgard], she needs to find her new queen, so that'll be her first order of business, she has some ideas."

Jane Foster (Natalie Portman)

Thor Jane Foster

A brilliant, human astrophysicist and Thor's ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster previously appeared in Thor and 2013's Thor: The Dark World. However, she hasn't shown up in the MCU since, outside of being mentioned by name in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok. That will change with Thor: Love and Thunder, which will draw from the Mighty Thor comics storyline in which Jane develops powers similar to Thor's and becomes a superhero while undergoing treatment for cancer. Returning to the role of Jane Foster will be Natalie Portman.

Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale)

Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic for 2013's Thor: God of Thunder #2, Gorr the God Butcher is a super-villain from the Marvel Comics Universe who will make his MCU debut in Thor: Love and Thunder. The comics version of Gorr was born on a harsh, nameless world populated by beings who firmly believe in the existence of Gods. When Gorr realized Gods are real but have done nothing to help his people, he vowed to destroy them, putting him on a collision course with Thor. Love and Thunder's Gorr will be played by Christian Bale, best known for playing Batman in The Dark Knight film trilogy.

Peter Jason Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)

Star-Lord fires his quad blasters in an Avengers: Infinity War poster.

Peter Jason Quill, aka Star-Lord, is the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a half-human, half-Celestial raised by a group of Ravagers after being taken from Earth at a young age. So far, the character has starred in the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy movies and played a supporting role in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, evolving from a self-centered thief and smuggler into a more mature superhero. Chris Pratt is set to reprise his role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder, having been photographed with Hemsworth in Australia. He also confirmed the news during an Instagram Live with Tom Holland.

Sif (Jaimie Alexander)

Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif

Sif is a female Asgardian warrior and has been Thor's friend since they were kids. Fiercely loyal to Asgard and its people, Sif played a supporting role in the first two Thor movies but hasn't shown up in the MCU since her second guest appearance on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. When interviewed, Sif actor Jaimie Alexander said she had to pass on Thor: Ragnarok due to a scheduling conflict with her TV show Blindspot. However, Alexander recently revealed she's flying to Australia, all but confirming earlier reports that Sif will return in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Nebula (Karen Gillan)

A Daughter of Thanos, Nebula is an alien orphan who was raised and trained to be an assassin by the Mad Titan, along with her adopted sibling Gamora. After serving as an antagonist in the MCU's first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Nebula evolved into more of a sympathetic antihero in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and later worked with Earth's Mightiest Heroes during Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, recently announced she will reprise the character in Thor: Love and Thunder via her Instagram Story.

Mantis (Pom Klementieff)

Mantis is a humanoid alien and empath who can both sense and control people's emotions by touching them. Gentle, if naive, Mantis was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and went on to become a full-time member of the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. She is played by Pom Klementieff, who seemingly confirmed she will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder when she geotagged an image of herself on her Instagram in Australia.

Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista)

Drax in the MCU

Drax the Destroyer is a deadly, if often unintentionally funny, alien warrior whose family was killed by Thanos. He made his MCU debut in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, becoming a full-time member of the Guardians. Drax has since appeared alongside the rest of the team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, along with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Although Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, has yet to be confirmed as an official cast member in Thor: Love and Thunder, there's video footage of him in Sydney.

Korg (Taika Waititi)

Korg is an easy-going Kronan warrior who befriended Thor when the pair of them were forced to compete in the Grandmaster's Contest of Champions on Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarok. The character went on to join Thor and his allies on their journey back to Asgard before reappearing as a resident of New Asgard (and Thor's roommate) in Avengers: Endgame. Waititi, who plays the CGI Korg via motion-capture, has confirmed the character will show up again at some point during Thor: Love and Thunder.

Actor Loki (Matt Damon)

Thor Ragnarok Matt Damon

Matt Damon, best known for playing Jason Bourne and starring in films like The Martian, made a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok as a nameless Asgardian portraying Loki in a re-enactment of the events from Thor: The Dark World. Damon and his family recently traveled to Australia, and it's been reported he gave a statement to local press confirming he will be staying in Sydney and working on Thor: Love and Thunder "for the next few months."

Actor Thor (Luke Hemsworth)

Thor Ragnarok Luke Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth's brother Luke Hemsworth makes a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok as Actor Thor, the nameless Asgardian who portrays the God of Thunder during the film's Thor: The Dark World re-enactment. While being interviewed on The Jess Cagle Show, Damon confirmed Actor Thor joins his Actor Loki in Thor: Love & Thunder's own Ragnarok re-enactment. "We were kind of reprising a cameo that we, that Luke Hemsworth and I did in the last one. And we had a ball and so Taika [Waititi] had us back again," Damon said. The other Hemsworth brother plays Ashley Stubbs on HBO's Westworld.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
