Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi posted a childlike drawing as a faux advertisement for the recently released film, poking fun at non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The filmmaker debuted the image shortly after the premiere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest Thor movie. Waititi scribbled a quick "poster" and uploaded the image it to his Instagram account with the caption: "New Thor NFT poster just dropped. All my profits go to making another poster. #thorloveandthunder only in cinemas (and on a burnt DVD I'm selling out the back of Ralphs on sunset)."

NFT culture is no stranger to a lighthearted jab. The cryptocurrency is based on individual digital ownership, like that of a rare painting or one-of-a-kind trading card. The confusion surrounding true ownership of a digital image versus just downloading or screenshotting it provides fertile ground for a joke, something the MCU's social media has previously exploited. When promoting the Blue-ray release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the social media team tweeted an NFT-targeted gif of a confused Peter Parker captioned "When someone starts talking NFTs."

Thor's Cryptic Crypto

Waititi's post was widely appreciated by fans, many of whom see the image as an expression of his colorful personality and sense of humor which is also present in his work. His approach to Thor: Ragnarok profoundly changed the MCU, leaning into wittier dialogue and a distinctive visual style. According to Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, Love and Thunder is a step up for the director in terms of silliness. "It was Taika at his craziest" he shared when asked about Waititi's filmmaking process.

With fans eager to know Thor's fate after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Love and Thunder has garnered a lot of attention, overtaking Thor: Ragnarok in the box office. In its first weekend, the Odinson's latest blockbuster grossed $143 million, $20 million more than its predecessor. At the time of writing, that number has since climbed to $302 million.
