Director Taika Waititi has revealed a potential storyline for Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder that stems straight from the source material.

Speaking with Variety, Waititi shared what might be in store for Jane on top of becoming the female Thor, specifically noting the character's battle with breast cancer from the comics.

"I think that’s a really powerful part of the books," he explained. "I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen."

Waititi added that the comics are a prime source of inspiration, but not everything can make it into the films.

"We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline," he said. "These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes. Like, 'Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.'"

In a storyline by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman, Jane Foster is diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer, all the while wielding Mjolnir and taking on the mantle of the Mighty Thor.

At Comic-Con International in San Diego, Thor: Love and Thunder was revealed to be in the MCU's Phase Four movie slate, with Natalie Portman reprising her role from Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
