Taika Waititi, who wrote and directed Thor: Love and Thunder, says Jane Foster's story in the film will be pretty close to the comics.

In an interview with Total Film magazine, Waititi addressed just how closely Thor: Love and Thunder would stick to the Mighty Thor comics run from which it draws. Waititi explained, "We stick pretty closely to Jane's storyline, and what happened to Jane... because that was such an influence on the film. We're trying to take the best parts of that." It's not clear at this time just which elements of Foster's story will and won't make it into the movie.

RELATED: Thor: Love and Thunder Welcomes Russell Crowe's Zeus to the MCUCreated by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Foster first appeared in 1962's Journey into Mystery #84 and served as a love interest for Thor. However, later, in the pages of Thor: God of Thunder #25, Foster took up Mjolnir to become the titular hero. That issue was written by Jason Aaron; illustrated by Esad Ribić, RM Guera amd Simon Bisley; colored by Ive Svorcina, Giulia Brusco and Simon Bisley; and lettered by VC's Joe Sabino. Foster subsequently starred as the titular character in a Thor series by Aaron and, primarily, artist Russell Dauterman. That book ran from 2014 until 2015, giving way to Mighty Thor, which featured Aaron and Dauterman returning as the book's primary creative team.

Foster took up the mantle of Thor after the events of Original Sin, which saw Odinson become unworthy of wielding Mjolnir. While serving as Thor, Foster also battled cancer. However, transforming into Thor came at a major cost for Foster, as wielding Mjolnir reduced the effectiveness of her chemotherapy treatments. During her time as Thor, Foster worked with such teams as the Avengers.

However, while he's on that journey, a new villain named Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) appears and starts killing all the gods. Foster will take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor in the film and wield Mjolnir. Thor: Love and Thunder also marks Portman's first time playing the character in a substantial way since 2013's Thor: The Dark World. The movie will also feature the returns of Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Waititi as Korg.

Thor: Love and Thunder is slated for release on July 8.
