Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic for 2013's Thor: God of Thunder #1, the comic book version of Gorr the God Butcher was born on a harsh, nameless world populated by beings who strongly believe that Gods exist. Outcast by his tribe for being a non-believer, Gorr sought to destroy all gods upon learning they are not only real but did nothing to save his family from dying. He wields All-Black the Necrosword, a weapon forged from the head of a Celestial that allows him to fly and is capable of killing Asgardians.

Thor: Love & Thunder marks Gorr's introduction to the MCU, as well as Bale's return to the comic book genre after playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy from 2005 to 2012. Images of the actor with a shaven head made their way online in April, suggesting the MCU's take on Gorr would be faithful to the character's appearance from the Marvel Comics Universe -- something these set photos confirm.

A loose adaptation of Jason Aaron's run on the Mighty Thor comics, Thor: Love & Thunder sees Natalie Portman return as the MCU's Jane Foster in a story that follows her journey to becoming The Mighty Thor. The film also focuses on Valkyrie searching for a queen to rule by her side as the new King of Asgard, with Tessa Thompson implying Love & Thunder will make it canon that her Asgardian warrior is queer.

Directed by Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (creator of Sweet/Vicious), Thor: Love & Thunder features multiple Guardians of the Galaxy, along with Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Russell Crowe as a key supporting character and, of course, Chris Hemsworth playing the God of Thunder for the eighth time. It opens in theaters on May 6, 2022.
