Thor: Love and Thunder leading man and Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Chris Hemsworth revealed what his one condition was for once again playing the God of Thunder in the character's newest cinematic outing.

Hemsworth explained, "I just love playing [Thor.] I love the journey I have been on with him. Not only as Thor, but just my life. The two have been side by side for 10, 11 years now and have both crossed over into each other's world from time to time." Hemsworth then revealed he would have only returned to the role if he got to work with Thor: Ragnarok director and Korg actor Taika Waititi again. "I don't know that I would've done another if Taika hadn't said yes, he was going to do it," the actor concluded. "And he had written this beautiful script which was a wacky, crazy, romantic comedy set in space and that I hadn't seen before."

Hemsworth's comments regarding Love and Thunder leaning toward romantic comedy mirror Waititi's own statements that the film was planned to be a romance, citing both Jack Kirby comics and the covers of Mills & Boon romance novels from the '30s as inspirations. "It's really about trying to make it interesting to myself," Waititi said. "And not do what everyone thinks I should do. Or what they're expecting me to do. "

Additionally, Hemsworth and his returning costar Natalie Portman -- reprising her role as Jane Foster -- stated Love and Thunder will finally show their characters' silly breakup. "There actually wasn't a whole lot of evidence to definitively say, 'This is how they broke up. This is what happened,'" Hemsworth noted. "It was left open for interpretation, which was great because it allowed us to go on this fun journey; 'What did their relationship look like when they were together? What did it look like when they were breaking up? Why did they break up?'" He then proclaimed that the scenes showing the conclusion of Thor and Jane's relationship was "some of the funniest stuff in the film."

Aside from starring as Thor in Love and Thunder, Hemsworth will also serve as executive producer on the movie, a fact revealed by one of its recently-released posters. Hemsworth is not the first Marvel star to serve in the role of EP, as Scarlett Johansson had previously done so with Black Widow.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters on July 8.
