WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Thor #1 by Donny Cates, Nic Klein and Matt Wilson, on sale Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Marvel Comics is kicking off a new era for the newly-minted King of Asgard when Donny Cates and Nic Klein begin their run on Thor in 2020. Writer Jason Aaron has brought his multi-year run with the God of Thunder to an end, establishing a new status quo for Thor as he replaces Odin as Asgard's ruler in the wake of War of the Realms.

This is the moment that Thor has dreamed of, but as they say, be careful what you ask for. Being in charge of and keeping the peace among the Ten Realms can be a Herculean task, and Thor has never been known for having a cool, calm demeanor when dealing with those who would oppose his demands. He would rather swing his hammer and call forth the lightning than sit in a debate room discussing political agendas.

That is exactly what Thor must do now as King of Asgard, but that doesn't mean he has to like it. And as a preview of Cates and Klein's Thor #1 reveals, the Odinson is still having a hard time adjusting to his early retirement.

The preview takes us on a trip with Mjolnir through all Ten Realms as it leaves a rainbow trail in its path. The magical hammer finally finds a resting spot on Midgard, aka Earth, smack dab in the middle of a battle between the Avengers and a large monster in New York City. Thor's hammer throw from Asgard to Midgard is a direct blow through the creature's head and mouth, dropping it with one blow.

With Mjolnir laying in a crater in the ground, Iron Man decides to pull a prank on his teammate and friend by asking if anyone has a Sharpie he can borrow. The reason for this is revealed later on as Mjolnir arrives back to Thor and Lady Sif, the new protector of the Bifrost, on Asgard. While Thor attempts to boast on his most impressive hammer toss, Sif reminds him to stop hiding from his new job and duties, and go be a king. It is here that Thor glances down at Mjolnir to find a message written on it from Tony Stark: "Nice shot! Enjoy your retirement."

It appears now that Thor is the King of Asgard, he is retiring from being a superhero. After all, his duties as king would trump being among Earth's Mightiest Heroes. However, there are examples of heroes pulling double duty as king and as Avengers. T'Challa is King of Wakanda and is currently the Avengers Chairman, and Namor has served as an Avenger, Defender and X-Man while sitting on the throne of Atlantis.

Perhaps since Thor is new to the job of king, he is deciding to put all his efforts into making sure he doesn't mess up, thus stepping away from his other responsibilities on Earth. Of course, we all know there will be threats and dangers that draw Thor back into the life of being a hero. The Black Winter is coming, and the Marvel Universe will need the Mighty Thor at the ready to defend it.
