Marvel fans' favorite Asgardian, Thor, is one of the heavy hitters of the Marvel universe. Even without his magical abilities and trusty hammer Mjolnir, Thor is still one of the strongest heroes around. Although the upper limits of his strength have varied over time, Thor has always been a serious powerhouse.

Although the god of thunder is so strong, there are still many heroes in Marvel lore that are able to match his strength. Most comic fans know that heroes such as the Hulk are stronger than Thor, but there are others that might surprise you. Here are the top ten heroes that you wouldn't think are stronger than Thor (but actually are).

10 Captain Marvel

Due to her recent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Carol Danvers is a very popular hero right now. Taking on the mantle from the Kree soldier Mar-Vel, Carol has since proven to be just as capable as any hero in the universe.

Although she has many fantastical abilities, one that sets her apart is her raw strength. Although her power levels have varied over the years, now Captain Marvel is clearly on another level. Her strength has surpassed some of the greatest heroes in the universe, including Thor.

9 Blue Marvel

One of Marvel's more recent creations, Blue Marvel has quickly risen to the top of the comic company's pantheon of heroes. A former marine and accomplished scientist, Adam Brashear got his powers when an experiment on anti-matter went horribly wrong.

Blue Marvel gained several powers, such as the ability to shoot energy beams and fly. When it comes to his physical strength however, he is truly impressive. This hero has shown the ability to go toe-to-toe, and sometimes even surpass, the strength of heroes such as Hulk, Sentry, and Thor himself.

8 Sentry

Another more recently created character, Sentry has proven to be a "Superman" archetype within Marvel comics. His overcomplicated introduction explained that the world had been forced to forget about Sentry. This not only made him cease to exist but also his dark, evil half the Void.

When Sentry was finally brought back however, he accomplished many great feats of strength that Thor couldn't dream of. For instance, on one occasion he ripped the god of war Ares in half.

7 Silver Surfer

A long-lasting, very popular character, Silver Surfer has long reigned as one of Marvel's best cosmic adventurers. Imbued with the Power Cosmic by the world-eater Galactus, Silver Surfer has proven to be every bit as powerful as some of Marvel's greatest heroes.

In terms of his raw physical strength, Silver Surfer has time and again shown to be exceptionally powerful. He has taken on some of the most powerful cosmic villains and won. On one occasion he even kn0cked the incredible Hulk unconscious with a mere slap to the face. Such power is well outside of Thor's wheelhouse.

6 Captain Universe

An extra-dimensional, self-conscious force, the Uni-Power picks individuals in a time of crisis to become its champion. This person is then transformed into the powerful Captain Universe. Sometimes the Uni-Power chooses already established heroes such as Spider-Man and Deadpool, while at other times it randomly selects normal citizens.

No matter who the Uni-Power chooses, that person becomes incredibly powerful as the new Captain Universe. Although he has all the typical powers of a cosmic hero such as energy projection and flight, Captain Universe's strength is nothing typical. The vessel of the Uni-Power becomes one of the few beings in the universe stronger than Thor.

5 Hyperion

Much like Sentry, Hyperion is another one of Marvel's "Superman" archetypes. This hero (and sometimes villain) comes from an alternate universe. He is the most powerful member of a Justice-League esque team called the Squadron Supreme.

In addition to his many incredible powers, Hyperion's strength is his most notable, described to be far beyond that of Thor or even the Hulk. Although there are many different Hyperions from several different universes, all of them prove to be much more physically powerful than Thor.

4 Hercules

Along with the Norse gods, Marvel also has its own interpretations of many gods from Greek mythology. The most famous of these is the demi-god, Hercules. Although they come from different mythologies, within the Marvel comics Hercules and Thor are actually quite close.

Over their long comic book histories, these two characters have fought together and against each other many times. Although more often than not Thor wins, that is due to his many magical abilities. If the two heroes were to enter a contest of pure strength, Hercules would win almost every time.

3 Gilgamesh

A member of the Eternals, Gilgamesh is quite an obscure Marvel character. Despite this, he is soon to debut in the MCU's upcoming film The Eternals. Many legends and myths exist concerning Gilgamesh's adventures during his thousand-year history.

Upon entering the modern age, Gilgamesh quickly proved to be a formidable hero. Much like Hercules, Gilgamesh has also lost in battle with Thor. Also much like Hercules, if you removed everything but the two heroes physical strengths, Gilgamesh would win every time.

2 Sun God

Only briefly showing up in the New Avengers comic, Sun God is the member of an alternate universe's superhero team called the Great Society. He was able to single-handedly defeat many of Earth's greatest Avengers and was only defeated when Doctor Strange summoned a powerful demon.

In combat with the Hulk, Sun God was not only able to withstand many of the green giant's mighty blows, but also returned the favor. Sun God's punches were able to injure the Hulk without much effort, something that Thor is simply incapable of doing.

1 Gladiator

Long-time leader of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and current Emperor of Shi'ar, Gladiator is one of the most powerful beings in all of Marvel comics. Much like characters like Sentry and Hyperion, Gladiator is another Superman archetype. In this case, however, the upper limits of Gladiator's powers are even more incredible.

Gladiator's strength is directly connected to his confidence. The more confident he becomes, the stronger he is. Even at this alien's lower levels, he is stronger than Thor but at his best, Gladiator could physically mop the floor with the god of thunder.
