WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Thor #2 by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

In Thor #1, a new threat to the Marvel Universe manifested itself in the form of the Black Winter. Little is known of the cosmic force of destruction, but it's clear that it was the one responsible for the death of a previous universe -- the reality the man called Galan called home. The sole survivor of this universe, Galan would be reborn as Galactus, also referred to as the Devourer of Worlds. Now, after billions of years, the Black Winter is once again imminent.

Galactus recently clashed with this so-called Star Plague again, and only managed to escape with his life. But the Silver Surfer has a plan -- one that would make Galactus even more powerful than ever before. Now, in Thor #2, the Devourer of Worlds takes the first steps to reach his new form -- and the results are already terrifying.

Thor Herald of Thunder

Since Galactus has now been able to escape the Black Winter on two separate occasions, it was decided that he was the universe's best bet at survival. In order to give him a fighting chance, the Silver Surfer concocted a plan to give him more power than ever before: five planets, scattered across the cosmos, have been kept hidden from the Devourer of Worlds all this time. These planets each have a specific energy that, if consumed, will transform Galactus into something else entirely.

For this universe-shattering mission, Galactus has chosen a new herald: Thor. In Thor #2, the God of Thunder assumes his new role and leads the Devourer of Worlds to the first planet on the Silver Surfer's list. After Thor evacuates the planet, Galactus proceeds to consume it... and already, the energy seems to render the celestial being more insatiable than ever. While feeding on the planet, Galactus begins to glow red with energy, as he keeps demanding more. His appetite grows so much in fact, that he ends up destroying the entire planet, despite Thor promising its inhabitants that it would survive.

When the planet is nothing but cosmic dust, Galactus is all that remains, and he gains a new appearance as a result. He's still recognizable as the Devourer of Worlds, but with definite differences: the horns on his helmet are not pointed spikes and there is a glowing pattern on his armor that gives him even more of a Kirby-esque quality. Worse still, he looks angrier and hungrier than ever.

Sure, the purpose of this transformation is to charge Galactus up so that he may face the Black Winter. But at what cost? This is the first transformation of a total of five and with four planets remaining, there's no telling what Galactus will look like by the end. Chances are, he may end up being as dangerous as the Black Winter itself... if not more.
