You don’t get to choose your family, but there are plenty of times that Odin and his children have probably wished otherwise. Thor’s family is one of the most notable groups in Marvel Comics, especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The relationships between Loki, Thor, Odin and, recently, Hela have been crucial narratives throughout the shared universe. Plenty of backstabbing, betrayals, deception and vengeful plots can be found in the histories of these characters. Loki and Thor, specifically, have almost always been bitter rivals. These two brothers have one of the most heated sibling rivalries in comic book history. Thor’s family drama isn’t just limited to the two brothers, though. Odin has repeatedly mistreated his children and Loki has betrayed his father a number of times. Wherever you look on the Thor family tree, you’re likely to find a wide range of inner-family mistreatment.

With this list, we’ve provided a look at some of the most dastardly misdeeds members of the Thor family have committed against one another. Some of them seem trivial; no one is terribly upset over the time Loki turned Thor into a frog. Some of these transgressions are unfathomable -- from the destruction of Asgard to Ragnarok, the Thor family has done some awful things to their own flesh and blood. The family's MCU future seems murky with the statuses of Loki and Odin being doubtful at best. Thor is the one of the only members of the family that’s definitely still standing (for now). Still, we can always look back to the past for evidence of the Thor family’s wrongdoings.

15 LOKI CAUSES SIEGE

marvel-siege

In terms of hurting your family, utterly destroying their homeland is one of the worst things you could do. So Loki’s role in the destruction of Asgard might just take the cake when it comes to the trickster’s misdeeds. In "Siege", Loki pulls the strings and causes Norman Osborn to attack Asgard.

Loki causes the destruction of his homeland just to get back at Thor. Worst of all, many Asgardians are victimized, too. The trickster god emerges looking like a hero because he sacrifices himself to fix a crisis he caused in the first place. If home is where the heart is, what does "Siege" say about Loki’s character?

14 ODIN'S BLATANT FAVORITISM

Thor Ragnarok Thor and Loki

Most of the entries on this list focus on one misdeed. Here, however, we want to point out a problematic pattern of Odin’s parenting that has had far-reaching effects on both of his children. Odin always heavily favored Thor, which caused the Thunder God to become a spoiled, arrogant Asgardian.

Meanwhile, Odin’s favoritism caused Loki to grow bitter and cold towards his family. Odin is arguably responsible for Loki’s descent into villainy. If Odin had been a better father, the Trickster God may have been a hero or, at the very least, he wouldn’t have become one of the most dangerous villains in the Marvel Universe.

13 LOKI TURNS THOR INTO A FROG

Throg

This transgression may seem petty now but, once upon a time, Loki dealt a crushing blow to Thor’s sizable ego by turning the Thunder God into a frog. It doesn’t get much more humiliating than going from roaming the Earth as a god among men to hopping around as a reptile.

Thor makes the most of the situation, though. When a war breaks out between frogs and rats, Frog-Thor lifts Mjolnir and becomes the godly Frog of Thunder. Best of all, even as a frog, Thor still bests Loki, so the Thunder God gets the last laugh in this story.

12 ODIN SENDS ENCHANTRESS TO EARTH

Odin is a classic example of a helicopter parent -- the Allfather is always excessively meddling in his children’s lives. Granted, Odin has a valid reason for being so domineering: the fate of Asgard is at stake. Sometimes, though, the Allfather takes his strict parenting too far.

For example, Odin has always disapproved of Thor’s relationship for Jane Foster. In the hopes of breaking up Thor’s relationship with a “lowly” human, Odin sends the Enchantress to Earth (ironically, the plan was Loki’s idea). Later comics revealed that Odin sent the sorceress to Earth as a punishment for her but the whole ordeal isn’t a good look for Odin.

11 THOR ENDS LOKI'S EXISTENCE

Thor carrying a wet Loki

Loki has practically always been a thorn in Thor’s side. It’s inevitable that Thor would snap under the strain of Loki’s villainy at least once. In The Mighty Thor #432, Loki pushes Thor over the edge when the God of Lies and Mischief kidnaps the son of Thor’s human host, Eric Masterson.

The two brothers fight and, upon emerging victorious, Thor spares his sibling. However, when Loki launches a final attack at the Mastersons, Thor takes matters into his own hands and temporarily ends Loki’s existence. As always, it was all part of Loki’s plan but this moment is still notable for Thor’s lack of restraint.

10 LOKI CAUSES RAGNAROK

Thor Ragnarok Loki

Ragnarok is one of the most notable events in Norse mythology, which is why Marvel has adapted it several times. The comic book version is radically different from the mythological one, though. That being said, there is at least one constant: Loki is the one that’s responsible for causing this destructive event.

When Loki invades Asgard, he sets off a chain of events that culminates in Ragnarok. The event entirely destroys Asgard and its inhabitants. Just like the myth, Ragnarok is a cycle, so the realm and all its people are reborn as good as new. Still, Loki deserves plenty of blame for causing this catastrophe.

9 LOKI TAKES ODIN'S PLACE ON THE THRONE

We aren’t really exaggerating when we say Loki is responsible for most of Thor’s misfortunes in the MCU. Loki’s handling of his brother is actually par for the course; in the comics themselves, Loki is often the culprit of Thor’s misery. The trickster god’s treachery spans the bulk of the MCU, and it’s notably nefarious in Thor: The Dark World and parts of Thor: Ragnarok.

In the second installment of Thor’s trilogy, Loki teams up with his brother to stop Malekith. Loki goes out like a hero, which devastates Thor. Eventually, it comes to light that Loki’s sacrifice was a lie. The trickster took Odin’s place on the throne (by disguising himself as the Allfather), which is a storyline that continues into Ragnarok.

8 ODIN'S TREATMENT OF THOR IN FEAR ITSELF

Odin’s parenting ranges from overly controlling to downright harsh. Odin’s treatment of Thor in "Fear Itself" might be the most extreme look at the Allfather’s cruelty. The Allfather takes down his own son and deems Thor unworthy of his hammer. Odin then imprisons Thor in Asgard. Evidently, through this act, Odin hopes to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy that would have ended Thor’s existence.

Prophecies are a recurring motif in Thor comics, but the characters’ handling of the one in "Fear Itself" is questionable at best. Despite Odin’s best efforts, the prophecy is fulfilled when he sacrifices himself to save Thor. The Allfather should have just let it play out without excessively tormenting his son.

7 LOKI CONVINCES WORLD THOR IS INSANE

ultimate-thor

Sure, destroying Asgard is one of Loki’s worst crimes but causing his brother to get locked up in a mental health facility is a similarly bad act. In the Ultimate Universe, Loki convinces nearly everyone on Earth that his brother is insane. Loki alters reality, which causes Thor’s teammates to believe he’s delusional when he proclaims to be a god.

The Ultimates get tired of what they believe to be Thor’s inaccurate view of reality and put him in a mental health facility. It’s all part of Loki’s plan to take down his brother and the Ultimates. In short, Loki strips his brother of his reputation and his good name.

6 LOKI TAKES FORM OF LADY SIF

Female Loki Sif

Many of Loki’s sins have a distinct style that makes each transgression uniquely uncool. The trickster god destroys his home realm and constantly pulls the strings to make his brother’s life a living nightmare. When Loki took the form of Lady Sif, Thor’s former fiance and frequent love interest, the trickster hurt his brother in a newly devastating way.

While Loki has disguised himself as countless people, his impersonation of Sif is noteworthy because it was nearly fatal for the Asgardian warrior. Taking the body of your brother’s lover has to be one of the worst ways Loki could possibly wound Thor, and he did it.

5 ODIN LIES TO LOKI ABOUT HIS ORIGINS

Loki Thor

Being told you’re adopted by your parent(s) might be one of the worst childhood fears many people experience. Odin takes this delicate situation with his adopted son and brutally mishandles the delivery of the news. Odin takes baby Loki into his home and proceeds to take extreme measures to hide the baby’s origins.

Odin makes Loki hate his own race and it’s not until adulthood that Loki learns that he was born a Frost Giant. Only then does Odin tell Loki the truth. At this point, the Allfather enters Odinsleep, leaving Loki to deal with a life-changing realization on his own. It’s no wonder that Loki subsequently spirals deeper into villainy.

4 LOKI CREATES SEVERAL OF THOR'S VILLAINS

Destroyer-standing-in-front-of-thor

Why get your own hands dirty when you can simply delegate? Loki is so determined to make Thor miserable that he creates many members of his brother’s rogues’ gallery. Some of the most notable examples include Molto, Executioner and the Enchantress. But Loki’s fingerprints are on a number of other Thor villains, too.

Loki is responsible for the powers of the Absorbing Man, who had been nothing but a common criminal before drinking Loki’s potion, and the Wrecking Crew, too. The Trickster god also sends the Destroyer to Earth in Thor, which further proves that Loki’s fingerprints are everywhere in Thor’s life.

3 ODIN WEAKENS THOR DURING A FIGHT

thor hercules fight 1

Of all the ways that Odin has mistreated Thor, this one might be the most petty of them all. In another attempt to sabotage Thor’s relationship with Jane, Odin bans his son from Earth. Thor, ever the rebel, goes to Midgard anyway after defeating a gauntlet of every available Asgardian warrior that tried to stop him.

Thor reaches Earth and Odin, furious that his son has gotten the better of him, seeks revenge. The Allfather halves his son’s power supply while Thor is fighting Hercules. Thor, of course, loses the battle, which gives Odin a small “victory” in this story.

2 LOKI IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THOR'S BANISHMENT

thor and loki 2011

From the outset, casual fans may not recognize Loki’s potential villainy in Thor. Passionate fans, though, know that Loki can never be trusted. It’s no surprise, then, that Loki manipulates Thor from the start in the MCU. For example, Loki is responsible for Thor’s banishment to Earth in the first chapter of the Thunder God’s cinematic trilogy.

The Trickster God convinces his brother to attack Jutonheim and practically tattles to Odin. The Allfather banishes the Thunder God which sparks the latter’s journey of self-discovery on Earth. In a way, Loki is responsible for everything Thor has been through in the MCU.

1 ODIN CAUSES RAGNAROK

Hela makes war on Asgard

Loki isn’t the only Marvel villain that Odin accidentally created. In Thor: Ragnarok, the viewer learns that Odin’s firstborn, Hela, ruled Asgard and the Nine Realms with her father until he couldn’t control her anymore. Worried about Hela’s violent tendencies and ambition, Odin locks her away like a fairytale princess.

Hela’s punishment, though, is particularly harsh. The Allfather wipes every trace of his daughter from Asgardian history (except that one painted ceiling). After Odin ceases to exist, Hela breaks free, more thirsty for revenge than ever before. Hela’s reign of terror is only terminated by Thor’s decision to launch Ragnarok, which destroys Asgard.
