It appears as though Thor: Love and Thunder will not be Chris Hemsworth's swan song in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the MCU star revealed in an interview that he is nowhere near ready to give up playing the role.

After Avengers: Endgame, which saw the retirement of Chris Evans' Captain America and the death of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Hemsworth noted that the film was the last film in his original contract, explaining, "Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again. It’s sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing." After Endgame's release, though, Hemsworth also noted, "I’d still love to do more, to be honest. And I don’t know what the plan is. I feel like we’ve opened up such a different character. I feel more energized for the possibility of where it could go... But I’ll use that in other places and other characters if it’s the end here."

Obviously, Soon after that, Hemsworth signed on for a fourth Thor film, the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be will be directed by Taika Waititi, returning himself for his second Thor film.

However, Natalie Portman is also returning for the fourth Thor movie after missing the previous Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok. Portman's Jane Foster will become Thor herself in the fourth film, which follows the acclaimed storyline from the comic books where Foster took over as Thor when the original Thor was no longer worthy of wielding his hammer.

Naturally, then, there have been rumors of whether Portman returning to the role meant that she would be replacing Hemsworth going forward as the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduces more new characters.

In an interview with the Polish magazine, Elle Man, though, Hemsworth disspelled the idea that he would be replaced by Portman. In response to a qeustion of whether he would be hanging his hammer up to pass it on to Portman, he replied, "Are you crazy ?! I'm not going into retirement. Thor is far too young for that. He's only 1500 years old! This is definitely not the film where I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so."

So while the MCU has lost Evans and Downey Jr., it sounds like one member of the "Big Three" will continue being a major part of the shared film universe.
