Russell Crowe has publicly stated the identity of his character in Thor: Love and Thunder, which also reveals a major plot point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

An audio clip from Crowe's appearance on Joy 94.9 has made its way online, featuring the actor casually discussing going to the set of Thor: Love and Thunder. "I'm gonna get on my bicycle, I'm gonna ride up to Disney Fox Studios, and around about 9:15, I shall be Zeus!" Crowe revealed.

"It's for Thor 4," he continued. "It's my last day of Zeus'ing about and I'm going to enjoy it."

The revelation that Crowe is portraying Zeus in Love and Thunder is already big news, but it also means the MCU film is adding another mythological pantheon to its ranks. Zeus rules over Mount Olympus as the Greek god of sky/thunder, which makes him a parallel to Chris Hemsworth's Thor. However, it is too early to tell whether Crowe's Zeus will be a friend or foe to the MCU's God of Thunder.

Marvel has recently rebooted its Greek Olympian gods in the comics, killing them in 2019's Avengers: No Road Home weekly series, and then resurrecting them as the villains in Al Ewing and Juann Cabal's Guardians of the Galaxy relaunch from 2020. Perhaps the most recognizable Greek god in the Marvel Universe is Hercules, who has served as an Avenger and fought alongside (and against) Thor on many different occasions.

Russell Crowe's addition to Thor: Love and Thunder was first reported at the end of March after set photos from Australia caught the Gladiator star hanging out with the film's cast. Other celebrities joining Crowe in Love and Thunder include Melissa McCarthy making her MCU debut as Hela and the return of Matt Damon. Jeff Goldblum is also rumored to make an appearance as the Grandmaster from Thor: Ragnarok.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillen as Nebula and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
