In addition to revealing the slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Phase 4, Marvel Studios revealed at Comic-Con International in San Diego that Jane Foster would return for Thor: Love and Thunder. However, when she returns, she'll be The Mighty Thor.
The images, which you can see below, were officially released by Marvel Studios following its Hall H presentation at SDCC and show actor Natalie Portman picking up Mjolnir.
Portman made her debut as Jane Foster in 2011's Thor, and reprised her role for the sequel. However, she didn't appear in Thor: Ragnarok, with Portman having seemingly parted ways with Marvel Studios. In that movie, Thor revealed he and Foster had broken up, explaining her absence from the film. At this time, it's unclear just what she's been doing in the time since her last appearance during Thor: The Dark World and how she'll undergo her transformation, which is caused by Mjolnir in the comics and no longer exists in the present timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Jane Foster was revealed as having become the God of Thunder in 2014's Thor #1, by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman, after Odinson lost his ability to do so after the events of the "Original Sin" event. At the time of her transformation, Jane has cancer, and the use of Mjolnir only makes things worse. It's unclear just what Thor: Love and Thunder will adapt of that arc.
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder starring Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Chris Hemsworth arrives in theaters November 5, 2021.
