In Marvel Comics canon, Foster first became Thor during the 2015 series The Mighty Thor, when Thor himself was deemed unworthy to lift the enchanted hammer Mjolnir. Foster was able to transform into Thor, but at a price: the transformation accelerated her cancer. Foster eventually perished in battle against the Mangog, but was resurrected and eventually became the new Valkyrie.

Director Taika Waititi revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that he read The Mighty Thor while filming Thor: Ragnarok and the series -- alongside other elements from Jason Aaron's run on Thor -- will serve as an influence on Love and Thunder, including Thor clashing with the villainous Gorr the God Butcher. A previous set video featured the return of Mjolnir after it was destroyed by Hela in Ragnarok, which could lead to Foster eventually wielding it over the course of the film.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillen as Nebula and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
