The following contains spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder, now playing in theaters
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown and expanded at an extraordinary rate, increasingly including unique fixtures, absurd characters and gonzo concepts in the franchise. It's befitting a faithful adaptation of the bizarre and endearing Marvel Comics, and sometimes that means introducing joke characters who have little role besides their place contrasting against the other heroes. One of the most entertaining of these characters from the MCU was Daley Pearson's Darryl, a normal human dragged into Thor's orbit in a series of comedy shorts, but inThor: Love and Thunder, it turns out these encounters ended up impacting his life, as Darryl has found a new life working in New Asgard in the capacity as tour guide and expert on the God of Thunder that he used to live with.
Darryl Jacobson was introduced in Team Thor, a pair of mockumentary shorts poking fun at Thor's absence from Captain America: Civil War. Darryl is a regular human, an office drone living in Australia. After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor decides to take some time off and ends up relocating to Australia and becoming Darryl's roommate. The comedy of the shorts came from the bombastic Thor invading Darryl's mundane life and running afoul of it. Afterwards, Darryl eventually briefly lived with the Grandmaster and survived the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
The shorts have always had a tenuous relationship with the canon of the MCU. Due to their comical nature and irreverent approach to the heroes -- hinting that Captain America is a murderer and suggesting neither he or Iron Man would want Thor on their team during their Phase 3 conflict -- placed it squarely in the realm of parody, but that might change now that Thor: Love and Thunder has been released. It turns out that since the events of Avengers: Endgame, Darryl got a job in New Asgard as a tour guide. He's seemingly content as he showcases the remnants of Mjolnir to a group of children and commenting about its power.
This suggests two possibilities. In one, the Team Thor shorts were indeed canon, and thanks to his experience with living alongside Thor for a time, Darryl was able to find a line of work that suited him. It's especially promising because his previous career saw him suffer from the increased stress of surviving the Snap and having to log in overtime to make up for his dusted co-workers.
This might even work within the context of Thor: Love and Thunder, as it explains where Thor went after his relationship with Jane Foster fizzled out -- confirming Darryl's small role in the God of Thunder's progression from happily committed man to hiding his hurt behind bravado in Thor: Ragnarok. Considering Thor: Love and Thunder focuses heavily on that romance, it's a nice touch that Darryl got a karmic reward for his time helping Thor, finding a new line of work in honor of him.
The alternative is that the Team Thor shorts nominally take place in a variant reality, and Darryl's MCU-counterpart is innately a fan of the God of Thunder. Either way, it's sweet to see Darryl still in the MCU, especially in a job he clearly cares for. However, if the Team Thor shorts did happen in canon, then it becomes even more adorable, as it means one of Thor's human friends was so impacted by their experience that he traveled the world, found a new line of work, and seems more peaceful than he has in his other appearances.
Reunite with Darryl in Thor: Love and Thunder, now in theaters.
