Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said Thor: Love & Thunder will bring out a different side of the character.

Speaking during an interview with Collider, Gillan explained how directors James Gunn and Joe Russo tapped into different aspects of Nebula's personality during their MCU movies. When it came to Thor: Love & Thunder helmer Taika Waititi, Gillan said he "really brought out the bonkers side. I think everyone is just really, really funny and bonkers and wild [in the film]."

The MCU's Nebula is an adopted daughter of Thanos who served as one of his assassins, prior to turning against him in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. She is known for being emotionally closed-off and dead serious, making it all the harder for her to connect with her adopted sister Gamora and the other Guardians. Over time, though, Nebula reconciled with her sibling and joined Earth's Mightiest Heroes in defeating Thanos in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The film ended with Nebula leaving Earth with Thor and the remaining Guardians, setting the stage for the events of Love & Thunder.

However, while Gillan indicated the Thor sequel would bring out Nebula's wilder and funnier side, that doesn't necessarily mean she's developed a newfound sense of humor. “I don’t know if it’s personal [levity]," Gillan explained. "Like I don’t think she's finding herself funny or being funny, but in her seriousness I think we will find her funny, and just the pure aggression that we’ve tapped into.”

Gillan will be joined by her GotG costars Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista during Thor: Love & Thunder, prior to reuniting with them for Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. All the same, it's unclear whether the Guardians will factor into the God of Thunder's battle with the film's villain -- a cosmic being known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) -- or part ways with Thor near the beginning of his latest adventure.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
