Natalie Portman is already bulking up for Thor: Love and Thunder—but her return as Jane Foster won't be without some tragedy.

Though she's sat out of the MCU since last appearing in Thor: The Dark World (not counting a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame), Portman's Jane Foster will be back in a big way for the upcoming fourth film in the God of Thunder's franchise. And this time, she'll be wielding Mjolnir herself. "I can’t tell you that much. I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles," Portman told Yahoo! "If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them they are, the better it is."

While Portman, naturally, couldn't reveal any major plot details, she did confirm that a key part of the comic book run that sees Jane Foster become Thor will make its way into the MCU. "It’s based on the graphic novel of the Mighty Thor. She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side."

Portman's return to the MCU and the announcement of the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok confirmed that Foster would indeed become Thor, as she did in Jason Aaron's run of The Mighty Thor, which kicked off in 2016. That event followed Thor Odinson becoming unworthy at the end of the Original Sin event. In the comic, Foster is battling cancer, but when she picks up Mjolnir, she physically transforms and gains the powers of Thor.

While it's unclear if Thor will become unworthy in the upcoming film, it's a safe bet that the story of Original Sin will be swapped out. Now, however, we know that Jane Foster's fight with cancer will remain a key part of her superhero origin.
