Hellboy: Thomas Haden Church's Movie Role Reportedly Revealed

Thomas Haden Church has reportedly landed the role of Lobster Johnson in director Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot.

Hellboy author Mike Mignola is working with Marshall for a gritty reboot of the franchise that stars Stranger Things star David Harbour in the title role. Church joins an all-star cast that already includes Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim.

According to Discussing Film, Church will play Lobster Johnson, the pulp hero with links to the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Johnson is described as a “vigilante who worked in secret in New York City during the 1930s who had a reputation for violence and burning his trademark lobster claw symbol into foreheads.”

Church, who played Sandman in Spider-Man 3, announced earlier this year that he had a mystery role in an upcoming comic book movie that isn't related to Marvel.

Lobster Johnson was introduced in 1999's Hellboy: Box of Evil #1 and originally thought to be a fictional creation of pulp serials and comics. Hellboy himself was a fan of Lobster Johnson and eventually discovered that he was real. Although Lobster Johnson died in 1939, Hellboy came across his ghost and formed a bond with the character.

Despite Lobster Johnson being a favorite from the world of Hellboy, audiences are yet to see him on the the big screen. Guillermo del Toro reportedly wanted to include the character in Hellboy II, and possibly cast Bruce Campbell, but Mignola vetoed the decision because he wanted to stay true to the character's origin.

The new Hellboy will ditch the idea of another origin story and pick up with a more established version of the B.P.R.D. as Big Red takes on Jovovich's Blood Queen. The recent leak of Marshall's Hellboy trailer didn't seem to show Lobster Johnson, so it's unclear how much of a role Church might have in the movie.

Arriving April 12, 2019, Neil Marshall’s Hellboy stars David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio.
