Slim pickings this week, as Martin Scorsese’s latest tour de force hits home video, the Super Friends get all super-friendy in another Warner Premiere movie, and Pac-Man’s untold story finally gets, er, told.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Hugo (DVD & Blu-ray)
It won a couple of Oscars the other day (even if it lost the ones it really wanted to win, like Best Picture and Best Director), but its relative success or failure at the Academy Awards shouldn’t impact your desire to see Martin Scorsese’s gilded, passionate mash note to the transformative power of cinema.
Justice League: Doom (DVD & Blu-ray)
Hey, it’s another one of Warner Bros. Animation’s adaptations of a DC Comics story, in this case Mark Waid’s “JLA: Tower of Babel” arc. And, hey, the voice cast is, once again, excellent: Kevin Conroy (Batman), Tim Daly (Superman), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), Carl Lumbly (Martian Manhunter) and Alexis Denisof (Mirror Master) lead the charge.
Johnny English Reborn (DVD & Blu-ray)
If you, like me, aren’t quite sure why they didn’t just leave Rowan Atkinson’s secret agent wherever the hell he was, take some solace in the fact that in this sequel you can watch Gillian Anderson, Dana Scully herself, vamp it up with a British accent.
Tomorrow When the War Began (DVD & Blu-ray)
It’s kind of like Red Dawn, Aussie-style: A bunch of teenagers come back from a camping vacation to find that their homeland was invaded and must take arms against a sea of troubles and, by opposing, end them. (What, a brother can’t drop a little Hamlet?)
Pac-Man: The Complete First Season (DVD)
That this is called the “first” season implies that there was a whole lot more to Pac-Man than an eating disorder
