WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 5, Episode 5, of This Is Us, "A Long Road Home," which aired Tuesday on NBC.

This is Us has returned with "A Long Way Home," a Big-Three-focused episode. The episode follows both Randall and Kevin in their respective personal journeys. Randall makes contact with someone who knew his biological mother, who lived a lot longer than Randall thought, while Kevin is still attempting to work out his new life with Madison. Yet, towards the end of the episode, the two finally make contact and start the work to repair their relationship following their devastating blowout during the Season 4 finale.

The argument between Kevin and Randall stemmed from their disagreement about how the Pearson family, and Rebecca herself, should confront her Alzheimer's diagnosis. Randall wanted Rebecca to seek extensive and experimental treatment, while Kevin wanted her to stay close to family and actually live her life. Randall eventually convinced Rebecca to go for the treatment behind Kevin's back. And when Kevin found out, he lashed out in the cruelest way he could muster, telling Randall the worst day of his life was the day Randall was adopted. Of course, this was after Randall told Kevin that Jack died ashamed of the man Kevin was becoming. Their horrible, cruel words to one another seemed to create an irrevocable divide between the brothers.

Randall and Kevin have had a strained relationship most of their lives. However, they have also come through for each other when it really mattered. Kevin skipped the opening night of his play to comfort Randall when he was in the throes of terrible anxiety, something only Kevin noticed. And when Kevin was struggling to learn his plays for the football team in high school, Randall taught him a memorization technique that he still uses to remember his lines for film roles. Still, while they always reconciled  in the past, after their latest disastrous fight, their bond had never been more broken, and fans weren't sure how they were going to overcome the canyon between them.

However, after Kevin and Madison start having problems related to his need to travel for work, Kevin realizes these issues parallel the problems that drove him and Sophie apart. Kevin remembers  the first time he left Sophie in New York to go to LA for auditions when he and Randall were 18 years old. Before he went, Randall called him to tell him he shouldn't leave Sophie for such a lengthy amount of time, but Kevin brushed off Randall's advice, unconcerned about his relationship.

From his vantage point in the present, however, Kevin realizes Randall had a point at the time and might be able to help him with Madison now. So Kevin calls Randall in the car on the way to the airport from which he will fly to Vancouver to shoot his new movie. Kevin says that he's calling Randall because he found himself asking, "What would Randall do?" He adds it's something he refers to a lot when he is trying to make important decisions. The interaction moves Randall, and he admits how nice it is to hear that from his brother. And although Kevin is ultimately unable to get the advice he sought because Randall cuts off the call, they brothers finally seem to be working on a proper reconciliation Moreover, the interaction inspires Randall to be brave and reach out to Hai, the man with information about his birth mother, Laurel.

Yet, Randall cutting off the call prior to Kevin having a chance to ask for the advice he needs is also a perfect encapsulation of their relationship. Kevin and Randall both have trouble talking to each other about their feelings and often just brush past their confrontations and continue forward. Yet, the two are grown men, so it seems like it's time for their relationship to develop into something more mature and well-rounded.

Created by Dan Fogelman, This Is Us stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Chris Sullivan and Susan Kelechi Watson. New episodes air Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC.
