WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 5, Episode 7, of This Is Us, "There," which aired Tuesday on NBC.

This Is Us' Pearson clan is one of the most beloved families on modern television, and they certainly live up to their reputation as a pinnacle of closeness in the show's most recent episode "There." The family is currently spread out across North America. Kevin is shooting a movie in Vancouver while his fiancée Madison is at home in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Rebecca and Miguel are quarantining at the Pearson family cabin and Toby and Kate are preparing for the arrival of their new baby. Finally, Randall and Beth traveled to New Orleans to learn about Randall's birth mother. Despite their physical distance, however, the Pearsons remain as close as ever.

Running counter to the present-day Pearsons is a Pearson from the past. During the episode, flashbacks explore Jack's relationship with his father. Jack's father attended every single one of Jack's Little League baseball games but, regardless of all that time together, Jack never developed a strong emotional bond with his father because his father was an alcoholic who had a tendency to be cruel. So when Jack had his own family, he worked hard to be nothing like his father. This helped him build a stronger family dynamic with his wife and kids than he and his brother had with their parents while they were growing up.

In this episode, when Madison goes into labor with her and Kevin's twins, Kevin does his best to get back to L.A. as quickly as possible. He's trying to live up to his father's example, and because his father always showed up physically and emotionally, he wants to do the same for his children. But Kevin also knows strong bonds are not dependent on physical closeness as, earlier in the episode, it's revealed that he sent Kate an edible bouquet because she and Toby are expecting a child they plan to adopt. Besides, even if he didn't send a gift, his support for his sister isn't limited by the national border that separates them from each other at the moment.

Later, Randall also demonstrates that close relationships can be developed and maintained across physical distance. At the end of the episode, he and Beth call Madison, who is alone and in labor in the hospital. Randall makes sure to articulate to Madison they are family, implying he and the rest of the Pearsons will support and take care of her. It doesn't matter that Madison is in L.A. and Randall lives in Philadelphia. The physical distance does nothing to diminish their familial connection. Even though, Madison is new to the Pearson clan, Jack and Rebecca instilled family values in their children that helped them learn how to create strong bonds they'll maintain regardless of how far away they may get from one another.

Rebecca and Miguel also show this tendency. When Kevin is frantic to get back to L.A. he turns to his mother and step-father for help, and the pair drop everything to find a flight for him. Kevin's gratitude for their assistance speaks to how strong their relationship is. In earlier seasons, Kevin could be cold towards Miguel, but their relationship has grown and developed since then thanks to an emotional closeness, not a physical one. At the same time, Kevin turns to his mother when he is panicking about arriving in time for the birth of his twins and she comforts him until poor cell service cuts off their call.

This Is Us' latest episode is just further evidence of the ways the Big Three nurture their relationships even when they aren't together. These are family values that they are now able to instill in their own growing families.

Created by Dan Fogelman, This Is Us stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Chris Sullivan and Susan Kelechi Watson. New episodes air Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC.
