Resident Evil has been given another live-action rendition with Netflix's Resident Evil series. Fans of the franchise were skeptical of the new iteration since previous attempts have not lived up to expectations. The biggest issue for critics in the past has been that films, like those starring Milla Jovovich, strayed from the game's mythos.

Netflix's Resident Evil attempted to solve this issue by using the games as the show's canon backstory. The story took place in two timelines, one in 2022 and the other in 2036, so the story happened after the events of Resident Evil: Village. However, the show made a few changes here and there to some things from the games.

10 Wesker's New Character Design Was A Shock

Netflix Albert Wesker and Resident Evil 5 Wesker

An obvious difference between the show and the source material was the appearance of Albert Wesker. In this installment, Wesker was a different race, and while this would be fine, and Lance Reddick's acting was fantastic, it does take away from the character. Despite being a stark difference from his in-game appearance, Wesker was obsessed with eugenics, something only ignorant, racist white men championed.

Also, this rendition of Wesker looks like a typical suburban dad, not a badass, superpowered 'secret agent' type or a mutated monster, as seen at the end of Resident Evil 5. Wesker is shown later in the show with a more traditional look with sunglasses and a trench coat, but he looks more like a Blade cosplay than Wesker.

9 People Were Worried About COVID

Young Billie Wesker Netflix Resident Evil

The attempt to connect the show with real-life using COVID-19 fell flat. For example, when one of Wesker's daughters, Billie, was bitten by an infected dog, she asked if she needed to quarantine. Several other throw-away mentions of the pandemic didn't add to the story.

COVID is not mentioned in the games for obvious reasons, and with the events that occurred in the Resident Evil universe up to this point, it is hard to believe that the pandemic would have happened. Not only were there more significant threats, like bioterrorism and giant mutated monsters, but protocols to stop the spread of COVID would most likely have been successful under Umbrella.

8 The Zombies Weren't Undead

Netflix Resident Evil Zeroes

When Resident Evil is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the undead. The franchise was a leader in the field of zombie games and lore. Umbrellas viruses could reanimate the dead, even those that had been dead for a significant amount of time.

So it was a surprise when Jade Wesker argued with a scavenger that the infected outside the camp were not dead. Jade stated that the 'Zeroes' out there were just infected people and that the virus had just rewired their brains, so all they wanted to do was spread the virus. While the games have shown its possible to be infected and transform without death, it would be naive to believe that none of the infected were reanimated.

7 A Marcus Wouldn't Control Umbrella

Evelyn Marcus Resident Evil

In the 2022 timeline, Evelyn Marcus was the head of the Umbrella Corporation. It was stated that Evelyn was the daughter of James Marcus, who, along with Oswell Spencer and Edward Ashford, founded Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, which was the precursor for the corporation.

However, according to game lore, Spencer and Marcus had a rivalry that turned to paranoia. This eventually led to James Marcus's death in 1988 by order of Spencer. Umbrella spent the next decade trying to erase Marcus from the company history. With this muddied past and attempted erasure, it's doubtful that someone related to Marcus would be able to rise to power in the company again.

6 Clones Are Everywhere

Resident Evil Wesker Clones

Well, this may be hyperbole, but several clones are in the series. Eventually, viewers were shown that the Albert Wesker of the show was not the same Albert Wesker from the games. Instead, this Wesker was one of three clones created to continue the original's research while he was busy in the field.

While it has been speculated that there may be clones of Albert Wesker, this has never been confirmed. There were even attempts to clone Wesker in Resident Evil: Code Genesis, but this game was not considered canon. Also, having living clones that Umbrella held was a bit of a stretch from the in-game storyline.

5 Umbrella Tried To Leave Bio-Weapons Behind

Resident Evil Joy

Every Resident Evil fan knows that Umbrella are the bad guys because they manufacture multiple bioweapons, and things always go wrong. If a virus was not created to serve as a weapon, it was designed to make 'superior' humans, but the results were still the same.

This is why Evelyn's obsession with Joy was so wrong for the corporation. Evelyn's goal was to use Joy to help eradicate mental health issues and possibly heavily influence people's behavior so that the company would make billions. Sure, the product had ties back to the t-virus, which helped it lean more toward something the company would be working on, but it seemed like all Evelyn cared about was money.

4 The Infected Weren't Much Of A Focus

Young Billie and Jade Wesker

It's expected that a Resident Evil title would focus on infected people. Whether the infected looked like traditional undead zombies or tall vampire ladies, the focus of the story was on stopping the infected.

However, the infected aren't the focal point of this Resident Evil. Of course, they were a driving force in choices made by characters, but most of the show was about issues between the human characters. The 2022 timeline is more of a teen drama, while the 2036 story was mostly Jade running from Billie. If it were more like the games, the infected would have the spotlight instead of being a side plot.

3 The Chainsaw Man Made An Appearance

Resident Evil Netflix Chainsaw Man

While inside a Brotherhood stronghold, a captured Umbrella operative was brought before a man wielding a chainsaw who butchered the operative and offered his parts to the 'queen' Zero. The man was rather large and wore a burlap sack, a long sleeve shirt, and slacks held up with suspenders. He appeared to be nothing more than the Brotherhood's bloodthirsty butcher for their Zero slaves.

Those who have played Resident Evil 4 will recognize this character as an imitation of the Chainsaw Man from the game that terrorized players in several encounters. The game's Chainsaw Man was infected with the Plaga parasite, making him highly resilient and aggressive.

2 Mind Control Played A Part

Mind Controlled Evelyn High Fives Billie Wesker

Evelyn wanted to use Joy to influence human behavior, and Wesker remarked that it looked like she wanted to develop mind control. Despite Evelyn not reaching her goal in the show, mind control did play a part. In the future timeline, it was shown that Billie could control Evelyn using a tablet due to electrodes implanted in Evelyn's brain.

Mind control was a facet of the games, although there was a different approach. Brainwashing was achieved using the chemical P30, which made those injected easy to control. Jill Valentine was under Wesker's influence, using a device attached to her chest to inject P30 in Resident Evil 5.

1 The Good Guys Used B.O.W.s

Resident Evil Netflix Croc

Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.) were genetically altered organisms created as weapons. Umbrella and other bioterrorist organizations had developed several B.O.W.s throughout the games, including Lickers, Las Plagas, and Tyrants. These weapons were exclusively hostile toward the protagonists, who never intentionally developed a mutated weapon.

However, toward the end of the series, viewers were shown that The University was dragging along a huge mutated crocodile. Jade had managed to keep the monster in a sleep-like state, and it could only be awakened by a button locked behind two locked switches. The crocodile was unleashed on Billie and her men.
